Change of the auditor of the Society. In the Autumn Meeting on 1 Dec 2022, Audit Society PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) was elected as the auditor of the Society for year 2023. However, PwC has informed that they will be able to conduct the audit in the time frame required for reporting the state publication support. Thus, it is necessary to elect a new auditor. The Board of the Society will make a proposal for the meeting.

Syyskokouksen 1.12.2022 päätöksiä
Seuran syyskokous pidettiin hybridinä 1.12.2022 Tieteiden talossa ja Zoomissa. Tällä kertaa hybridi toimi ihan kohtuullisesti. Kokouksessa hyväksyttiin Seuran toimintasuunnitelma ja talousarvio 2023. Talousarvio on raskaasti alijäämäinen, mutta kokouksessa katsottiin, ettei Seuran ole pitkäjänteisenä sijoittajana syytä lähteä sopeuttamaan toimintaansa yhden heikon sijoitusvuoden takia. Mikäli heikko rahoitustilanne jatkuu, edessä voi olla toiminnan sopeuttamista. Metsätieteiden päivän ajankohta koordinoidaan Suomen metsäyhdistyksen Metsäpäivien kanssa. Seuran julkaisutoimitus valmistelee datan avaamisen vaatimusta Seuran tiedelehdissä vuoden 2024 alusta alkaen. Tähän liittyen järjestetään myös hybridiseminaari tai webinaari tutkimusaineistojen ja ‑datan avaamisen FAIR-periaatteista (findable, accessible, interoperable, reproducible).

The Autumn Meeting of our Society was held in hybrid format in the House of Science and Letters and in Zoom on 1 December 2022. The delegates accepted the Plan of Activities and budget for 2023. The budget is heavily deficient but, according to the meeting decision, the Society does not need to adjust its activities because of a weak year in the financial market as the Society is a long-term investor. If the weak economic situation continues, adjustments may be needed in the future. Timing of the Forest Sciences’ Day will be coordinated with the Forest Days of the Finnish Forest Association. The Editorial Office of the Society will prepare the necessary actions before the journals of the Society will start to request open data and code as a condition for publishing at the beginning of 2024. Connected to this, the Society will organise a hybrid seminar or a webinar on the FAIR principles of opening data and research materials (findable, accessible, interoperable, reproducible).

Avoimuuden edistäjä ‑palkinto Suomen Metsätieteelliselle Seuralle
Suomen Metsätieteelliselle Seuralle myönnettiin Avoimen tieteen ja tutkimuksen talvipäivillä Jyväskylässä 10.11.2022 Avoimuuden edistäjä ‑palkinto metsäntutkimuksen avaamisesta tutkimusyhteisölle ja suurelle yleisölle julkaisusarjoissa ja tapahtumissa. Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura on edistänyt Jokamiehenoikeutta metsätieteeseen vuodesta 1994 alkaen, jolloin Silva Fennican artikkelitiivistelmien julkaiseminen avoimena Internetissä aloitettiin. Sittemmin avoimesta tiivistelmäjulkaisemisesta on tullut tiedelehtien valtavirtaa. Vuonna 1998 avoimuus laajennettiin koko artikkeleihin, jotka tulivat Silva Fennicassa vapaasti luettaviksi yhtenä ensimmäisistä kansainvälisistä tiedelehdistä. Suomenkielisessä Metsätieteen aikakauskirjassa toteutettiin samaa politikkaa. Vuonna 2005 Seura alkoi julkaista yhteistyössä Helsingin ja Joensuun yliopistojen kanssa väitöskirjasarja Dissertationes Forestalesia, jossa julkaistaan suomalaisten metsätieteiden väitöskirjojen yhteenveto-osat avoimena verkossa.
Seuran varhainen avoimuuspolitiikka oli suurelta osin Seuran tiedelehtien pitkäaikaisen päätoimittajan Eeva Korpilahden ansiota. Hän ymmärsi avoimen julkaisemisen edut tutkimustiedon saatavuudelle ja leviämiselle vuosia ennen Budapestin avoimen julkaisemisen aloitetta, joka toi avoimuuden, aluksi käsitteenä Open Access, yleiseksi puheenaiheeksi tiedeyhteisössä ja julkaisutoiminnassa.
Contributor to Open Science Prize for Finnish Society of Forest Science
Contributor of Open Science Prize was awarded to Finnish Society of Forest Science in the Finnish Open Science Winter Conference in November 2022 for opening forest research for scientists and public at large in open access journals and science events. Finnish Society of Forest Science has promoted the Everyone’s Right to Forest Science since 1994 when open access publishing of Silva Fennica’s abstracts was initiated in the Internet. Later, openness of abstracts has become main stream in scientific journals. In 1998, the openness was extended to whole text articles of Silva Fennica as one of the first international scientific journals. The Finnish language Metsätieteen aikakauskirja has followed the same policy. The Society has published the monograph series Dissertationes Forestales in cooperation with the University of Helsinki and the University of Eastern Finland since 2005. The series publishes Finnish doctoral theses open in the Internet.
The early openness policy of the Society was developed by our visionary long-time Editor-in-Chief, Dr Eeva Korpilahti. She understood the value of openness for access to and distribution of research-based knowledge years before the Budapest Manifest that brought openness, initially as open access, to the general discussion in the research and publishing communities.

Finnish Society of Forest Science promotes forest research in Finland. As a means to reach this goal, the Society awards grants for research, travel that supports research or post-graduate studies, other international activities, language studies, and other purposes that advance forest sciences.

Ammattisanastosta on hyötyä metsäalan viestinnässä ja myös alan tietojärjestelmien sekä tietopalveluiden kehittämistyössä. Suomen metsäkeskus vetää laajaa sanastotyötä, jossa koostetaan metsäalan keskeinen ammattisanasto. Hankkeen tuloksena on nyt valmistunut Metsähydrologia ja metsäojitus -sanasto, jota voi kommentoida oikeusministeriön Lausuntopalvelu.fi-palvelussa.
Metsähydrologia ja metsäojitus -sanasto sisältää termimääritykset 181 veteen ja ojitukseen liittyvälle keskeiselle käsitteelle. Suomen kielen rinnalla termimääritykset julkaistaan myös ruotsiksi ja englanniksi. Tämän lisäksi sanastossa ovat mukana myös ruotsin-, englannin- ja venäjänkieliset termivastineet.
Metsäkeskus kutsuu metsäalan ammattilaisia kommentoimaan sanastoehdotusta Lausuntopalvelu.fi-palvelussa. Sanaston kommentointi on mahdollista yleisesti koko sanaston tasolla, yksittäisen käsitekokonaisuuden tai yhden käsitteen termitietojen tasolla. The meeting is open for all ordinary and honorary members of the Society, and to the representatives of supporting members who must present an authorisation from the supporting member. Registeristration is closed. Because of the large number of participants, we cannot accept post-registrations.
Forest Sciences’ Day will be organised for the 30th time on 26 October 2022 in the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki. The Day was organised for the first time in 1984 in connection to the 75th anniversary of the Finnish Society of Forest Science. Since 1995, the Day was organised annually under the name Forest Science Day. We will recover the name in plural, Forest Sciences’ Day, now on the occasion of the 30th event for emphasising the multidisciplinary nature of forest sciences.
The topic of the year 2022 will be “Measurement and valuation of biological diversity”. Diversity of forests forms the interconnected fabric of life that supports their functions. The fabric of life enables the functioning of forest ecosystems, resilience to disturbances, adaptation to environmental changes and sustainable timber production. In the Forest Sciences’ Day we will review if all nodes in the fabric of life are equally important. We will ask how much the fabric of life may be disturbed before it cannot support the life of a forest. We will evaluate if people can repair the fabric of life by means of nature management. We will have a look on the methods for measuring these phenomena. Above all, we will ask what is the value of the forest diversity for the nature, economy and society. During the morning, we will have a plenary session, in which the best experts of diversity science will answer to these and other questions.
We cannot make all important questions in the plenary, much less answer to all of them. Thus, the science clubs of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will organise six parallel sessions in the afternoon. The parallel sessions will provide the view points of ecology, silviculture, management planning, economics, logistics and social sciences and humanities to the value of biological diversity of forests.
Both the morning plenary session and afternoon parallel session will be organised in hybrid mode, which will enable remote participation all delegates that want it.

Metsätieteiden päivä järjestetään 30. kerran 26.10.2022 Helsingin yliopiston Viikin kampuksella. Päivä järjestettiin ensimmäisen kerran Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran 75-vuotisjuhlien yhteydessä vuonna 1984 ja vuodesta 1995 alkaen tilaisuus oli vuosittainen nimellä Metsätieteen päivä. Nyt 30. kerralla palautamme monikollisen nimen Metsätieteiden päivä korostaaksemme metsäntutkimuksen monitieteistä luonnetta.
Vuoden 2022 teema on ”Monimuotoisuuden mittaaminen ja arvottaminen”. Metsien monimuotoisuus muodostaa niiden toimintaa tukevan, yhteenliittyneen elämän verkon. Tämä verkko mahdollistaa metsäekosysteemien toiminnan, toipumisen häiriöistä, sopeutumisen muuttuvaan ympäristöön ja kestävän puuntuotannon. Metsätieteiden päivässä pohdimme ovatko kaikki elämän verkon solmut yhtä tärkeitä. Kysymme kuinka ”repaleisena” verkko vielä kannattelee metsän elämää. Arvioimme voiko ihminen luonnonhoidon keinoin paikata elämän verkkoa. Tarkastelemme miten näitä ilmiöitä voidaan mitata. Ennen kaikkea esitämme kysymyksen mikä on monimuotoisuuden arvo luonnolle, taloudelle ja yhteiskunnalle. Aamupäivällä on kaikille yhteinen kokous, jossa monimuotoisuustutkimuksen parhaat asiantuntijat pohtivat mm. näitä kysymyksiä:

Aamupäivän puhujat
Aamupäivän yhteiskokouksessa emme nosta esille kaikkia kysymyksiä, emmekä saa kaikkeen vastausta. Siksi lounaan jälkeen Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran tieteenalakerhot järjestävät kuusi rinnakkaiskokousta, joissa on metsien monimuotoisuutta tarkastellaan ekologian, metsänhoidon, mittaamisen ja suunnittelun, taloustieteen, logistiikan ja ihmistieteiden näkökulmista. Iltapäivän lopuksi on vapaamuotoinen tilaisuus, jossa jaetaan Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran huomionosoitukset ansioituneille metsäntutkijoille ja näemme valokuvaesityksen syyskuun alun retkeilyltä Viroon. Päivän päättää kahden webinaarivuoden jälkeen taas suosittu buffet, jonka ääressä käydään vilkasta metsätieteellistä keskustelua.

Forest Sciences’ Day will be organised for the 30th time on 26 October 2022 in the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki. The Day was organised for the first time in 1984 in connection to the 75th anniversary of the Finnish Society of Forest Science. Since 1995, the Day was organised annually under the name Forest Science Day. We will recover the name in plural, Forest Sciences’ Day, now on the occasion of the 30th event for emphasising the multidisciplinary nature of forest sciences.
The topic of the year 2022 will be “Measurement and valuation of biological diversity”. Diversity of forests forms the interconnected fabric of life that supports their functions. The fabric of life enables the functioning of forest ecosystems, resilience to disturbances, adaptation to environmental changes and sustainable timber production. In the Forest Sciences’ Day we will review if all nodes in the fabric of life are equally important. We will ask how much the fabric of life may be disturbed before it cannot support the life of a forest. We will evaluate if people can repair the fabric of life by means of nature management. We will have a look on the methods for measuring these phenomena. Above all, we will ask what is the value of the forest diversity for the nature, economy and society. During the morning, we will have a plenary session, in which the best experts of diversity science will answer to these and other questions:

Plenary speakers
We cannot make all important questions in the plenary, much less answer to all of them. Thus, the science clubs of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will organise six parallel sessions in the afternoon. The parallel sessions will provide the view points of ecology, silviculture, management planning, economics, logistics and social sciences and humanities to the value of the biological diversity of the forests. By the end of the afternoon, we will have an informal common gathering, in which we will award the honours of the Finnish Society of Forest Science to outstanding forest scientists and see a photo presentation on the excursion of our Society to Estonia at the beginning of September. The Day will end to our popular buffet, which will provide a forum for lively discussions on forest sciences – after two years of webinars.
Both the morning plenary session and afternoon parallel session will be organised in hybrid mode, which will enable remote participation to all delegates that want it.

Suomalaisten metsäsuhteita ja niiden muutosta on tutkittu Metsämiesten Säätiön rahoittamassa Metsäsuhteet yhteiskunnallisessa muutoksessa -tutkimushankkeessa (2019 – 2022). Tutkimushankkeessa on edistetty metsäsuhteiden tunnistamista ja ymmärtämistä ja vahvistettu metsäsuhdetutkimusta.
Metsäsuhteet osana suomalaista metsäkulttuuria vaikuttavat metsiä koskevaan päätöksentekoon ja metsien erilaisiin käyttötapoihin sekä siten koko yhteiskuntaan. Tutkittu tieto lisää ymmärrystä metsäsuhteista ja niiden vaikutuksesta yksilöissä, yhteisöissä ja yhteiskunnassa.
Hankkeen väitöskirjatutkija YTM, metsätalousinsinööri Tuulikki Halla tarkastelee ammatillisia metsäsuhteita ja väitöskirjatutkija FM Reetta Karhunkorva metsänomistajien metsäsuhteita. Tutkimushankkeen johtaja dosentti Jaana Laine esittelee Suhteeni metsään -kirjoituskeruun tuloksia.
Tutkimushankkeessa kerättiin kattava, 87 haastattelua ja 309 kirjoitusta sisältävä tutkimusaineisto. Aineisto avaa laajan kirjon metsäammattilaisten, metsänomistajien ja laajemminkin suomalaisten metsäsuhteisiin sekä niissä vaikuttaviin tunteisiin, muistoihin ja kehollisiin kokemuksiin.
Metsäsuhteet yhteiskunnallisessa muutoksessa -keskustelutilaisuudessa pohditaan ja keskustellaan tutkimusten perusteella suomalaisista metsäsuhteista. Tervetuloa mukaan!

Asialistalla on vuoden 2023 toimintasuunnitelman, talousarvion ja jäsenmaksun suuruuden hyväksyminen sekä Seuran puheenjohtajan, varapuheenjohtajan ja hallituksen jäsenen valinta erovuoroisen tilalle. Autumn meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science on 1 December 2022

Statutory Autumn Meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will be on Thursday, 1 December 2022 starting 15:30 in the Room 505 of the House of Sciences and Letters. Before the meeting, you may participate in the seminar “Human-Forest Relations in the Changing Society” (in Finnish) in the Room 104 of the same venue. The Autumn Meeting agenda will include acceptance of the plan of activities, budget and membership fee for 2023, and election of the Chair, Vice-Chair and a Board member. We will also decide the auditor and reviewer of activities of our Society in 2023. The full agenda will be published on our web site early November 2022. Mark your calendar! The meeting will be Finnish-English bilingual.

Metsätieteiden päivä järjestetään nyt 30. kerran Helsingin yliopiston Viikin kampuksella 26.10.2022. Päivä järjestettiin ensimmäisen kerran Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran 75-vuotisjuhlien yhteydessä vuonna 1984 ja vuodesta 1995 alkaen tilaisuus oli vuosittainen nimellä Metsätieteen päivä. Nyt 30. kerralla palautamme monikollisen nimen Metsätieteiden päivä korostaaksemme metsäntutkimuksen monitieteistä luonnetta.
Vuoden 2022 teema on ”Monimuotoisuuden mittaaminen ja arvottaminen”. Metsien monimuotoisuus muodostaa niiden toimintaa tukevan, yhteenliittyneen elämän verkon. Tämä verkko mahdollistaa metsäekosysteemien toiminnan, toipumisen häiriöistä, sopeutumisen muuttuvaan ympäristöön ja kestävän puuntuotannon. Metsätieteiden päivässä pohdimme ovatko kaikki elämän verkon solmut yhtä tärkeitä. Kysymme kuinka ”repaleisena” verkko vielä kannattelee metsän elämää. Arvioimme voiko ihminen luonnonhoidon keinoin paikata elämän verkkoa. Tarkastelemme miten näitä ilmiöitä voidaan mitata. Ennen kaikkea esitämme kysymyksen mikä on monimuotoisuuden arvo luonnolle, taloudelle ja yhteiskunnalle. Aamupäivällä on kaikille yhteinen kokous, jossa monimuotoisuustutkimuksen parhaat asiantuntijat pohtivat mm. näitä kysymyksiä.
Aamupäivän yhteiskokouksessa emme nosta esille kaikkia kysymyksiä, emmekä saa kaikkeen vastausta. Siksi iltapäivällä Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran tieteenalakerhot järjestävät kuusi rinnakkaiskokousta, joissa monimuotoisuutta, sen mittaamista ja arvottamista käsitellään metsätieteiden eri osa-alojen näkökulmasta. Onko sinulla uusia tutkimustuloksia aiheesta tai tutkimuksen soveltamisesta käytännön metsätalouteen? Tarjoa esitystäsi siihen iltapäiväkokoukseen, johon se mielestäsi lähinnä kuuluu. Alempaa löytyvät linkit jokaisen rinnakkaiskokouksen tarkempaan kuvaukseen.

In these sessions, the forest diversity, its measurement and valuation will be discussed from the viewpoints of several subdisciplines of forest sciences. Do you have new research results on forest diversity or experiences on application of diversity science to forest management? Offer a talk to the parallel session that is the closest to your topic. Talks in English are warmly welcome. If you cannot read the instructions in Finnish, do not hesitate to contact the club’s contact person. They will be happy to help you.

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran Viron retkeilylle 1.-3.9.2022 on vielä muutama paikka vapaana
Järjestämme syyskuun alussa kolmipäiväisen metsäretkeilyn Viroon. Ilmoittautuminen päättyi 10.5.2022, mutta muutama paikka jäi vapaaksi ja siksi ilmoittautumislomake on vielä auki reilun viikon. Vielä on siis mahdollista ilmoittautua kiinnostavalle tutustumismatkalle Viron metsiin. Tarjoamme näitä viimeisiä paikkoja ensisijaisesti Seuran jäsenille, mutta voit aivan hyvin kertoa mahdollisuudesta myös kaverille.
Retkeilyn aikana tutustumme Viron metsäntutkimukseen ja metsätalouden käytäntöön, näemme huippututkimusta modernissa laboratoriossa, koemme vanhan ajan tunnelmaa virolaisessa kartanossa ja retkeilemme virolaisessa metsässä. Working language during the excursion will be English.
We will organise a three-day forest excursion to Estonia at the beginning of September. The official registration was closed on 10 May. However, we still have some vacancy in the excursion. Thus, the registration is still open for a bit more than a week. If you are interested, please, register soon. We offer this late registration especially for the members of our Society but feel free to inform an interested friend.
We will explore Estonian forest research and practical forestry, see top science in modern laboratories, feel old times in an Estonian manor and walk through an Estonian forest. The excursion will be organised in cooperation with the Department of Forestry at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. The programme includes:

We will depart from Helsinki on Thursday 1 Sep 2022 on board the 7:30 ship to Tallinn. We will lodge the first night in Hotel Dorpat in Tartu and the second in the Sagadi Manor Hotel. We will return to Helsinki on Saturday 3 Sept 2022 at 18:30.
The price of the excursion to the members of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will be 200 / 175 €, depending on the lodging in Sagadi in the Manor Hotel or in the Estate Manager’s Hostel, respectively. The price for non-members will be 270 / 245 €.
Please, register using the link below as soon as possible. In Sagadi, the Manor Hotel has only a couple of vacant places but the Estate Manager’s Hostell has plenty of vacancy. The Manor Hotel lodging will be reserved on first registered, first served basis.
The registration will be confirmed by paying a non-refundable reservation fee of 75 € at latest on 10 June 2022. The rest of the price will be paid in August before travel. We recommend a travel insurance for cancelations.

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran opinnäytetyöpalkinnot Tuomas Yrttimaalle ja Esko Karviselle
Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran jakaa vuosittain opinnäytetyöpalkintoja erinomaisista edellisen vuoden aikana hyväksytyistä metsätieteen tohtorin väitöskirjoista ja pro gradu -töistä. Vuosittain palkitaan harkinnan mukainen määrän opinnäytetöitä tai tai palkinnot voidaan jättää jakamatta. Tyypillisesti väitöskirjapalkinnon on saanut vuosittain 1-2 vastaväitellyttä tohtoria ja pro gradu -palkinnon 1-3 maisteria. Vuoden 2022 palkinnot julkistettiin Seuran kevätkokouksessa 29.3.2022.
Väitöskirjapalkinnon sai MMT Tuomas Yrttimaa Itä-Suomen yliopistosta työstään ”Characterizing tree communities in space and time using point clouds”. Palkintolautakunta kiitteli työn laajuutta, jota ei oltu saavutettu syvällisyyden kustannuksella. Työ avaa uusia mahdollisuuksia käyttää pistepilviaineistoja metsäntutkimuksessa ja metsätalouden suunnittelussa. Yhdestä osatyöstä on tehty Itä-Suomen yliopistossa keksintöilmoitus.
Tuomas Yrttimaan väitöskirjan yhteenveto-osa on julkaistu Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran, Helsingin yliopiston ja Itä-Suomen yliopiston yhteisesti julkaiseman väitöskirjasarja Dissertationes Forestalesin numerossa 314. (https://doi.org/10.14214/df.314) Työ on vapaasti luettavissa, tulostettavissa ja jaettavissa CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 -lisenssin mukaan.
Pro gradu ‑palkinnon sai MMM Esko Karvinen Helsingin yliopistosta työstään ”The effects of winter temperature and shared niche on population dynamics of autumnal moth and winter moth”. Palkintolautakunta kiinnitti erityisesti huomiota Esko Karvisen erinomaiseen pitkän aikasarjan analyysiin. Esko Karvisen pro gradu ‑työ on luettavissa Helsingin yliopiston e-thesis-palvelussa:

Finnish Society of Forest Science awards annually prizes for excellent doctoral and Master’s theses accepted during the preceding year. The number of awards is not fixed but depends on the quality of the theses proposed in each year. Typically, the Society awards 1-2 prizes for excellent doctoral dissertations and 1-3 prizes for excellent M.Sc. theses. The prizes of 2022 were published in the Spring meeting of the Society on 29 March 2022.
The Dissertation Prize was awarded to Dr Tuomas Yrttimaa from the University of Eastern Finland for his work “Characterizing tree communities in space and time using point clouds”. The Award Committee acknowledged the wide scope of the work that was not achieved at the expense of depth. The work presents new methods for applying point cloud data in both forest research and management. one of the methods has produced an invention announcement at the University of Eastern Finland.
The dissertation summary article of Dr Yrttimaa’s work was published as volume 314 in Dissertationes Forestales (https://doi.org/10.14214/df.314), which is a dissertation monograph series published by the Finnish Society of Forest Science, the University of Helsinki, and the University of Eastern Finland. It is open access with CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence.
Tuomas Yrttimaa gave a talk on his dissertation research in the Spring Meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science on 29 March 2022. The recording may be viewed from the news page of the awards.
The prize for an excellent Master’s thesis was awarded to M.Sc. Esko Karvinen from the University of Helsinki for his research “The effects of winter temperature and shared niche on population dynamics of autumnal moth and winter moth”. Finnish Society of Forest Science organised a three-day forest excursion to Estonia at the beginning of September 2022. We saw both forest research and forestry practice in Estonia, visited modern top science laboratories, felt the old days in an Estonian mansion and hiked in a hemiboreal forest. We organised the excursion in cooperation with the forest science department of the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
Estonian Forest Service’s (Riigi Metsamajanduse Keskus, RMK) board member Kristjan Tõnisson gave us a general presentation on Estonian forest resources, their governance and challenges to the Estonian forest policy.
Chief Forester Martin Tischler (right) of Tornator Eesti OÜ guided us in the company’s forest estate in Kose and told us about the company’s forest management practices. We saw also the challenges for managing sapling stands in the hemiboreal region.
In the second morning, we divided into three groups that familiarised with the research and education in ecology at the University of Tartu, remote sensing research at the University of Tartu and social science research of forests in Estonia. Professor Ivika Ostonen (right) presented us the soil ecology laboratory at the University of Tartu.
In the afternoon, we visited the Järvselja forestry field station of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. We saw, among other destinations, the SMEAR Eesti research facility, where the relationships between the atmosphere and hemiboreal forests is studied, and a 100-yrs old aspen stand with 1200 m3 timber per hectare.
The second night we were in the mansion-hotel Sagadi where we also had a common excursion dinner. The mansion park housed both delicately sheared trees and natural-like forests.
Finnish Society of Forest Science awards annually prizes for excellent doctoral and Master’s theses accepted during the preceding year. The awards are made among the theses proposed by the Department of Forest Sciences at the University of Helsinki and the School of Forest Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland. The number of awards is not fixed but depends on the quality of the theses proposed in each year. Typically, the Society awards 1-2 prizes for excellent doctoral dissertations and 1-3 prizes for excellent M.Sc. theses.

Prize for an excellent doctoral dissertation
Tuomas Yrttimaa, University of Eastern Finland. Characterizing tree communities in space and time using point clouds. https://doi.org/10.14214/df.314
In his dissertation research “Characterizing tree communities in space and time using point clouds”, Tuomas Yrttimaa developed innovative automatic point cloud methods for studying the structure of trees and forests. His dissertation exceeds current requirements: It is composed of five peer-reviewed articles and the extended dissertation summary. All articles were published in international journals before the dissertation date. Tuomas Yrttimaa is the first author in all of them.
Tuomas Yrttimaa presents a new method for detecting and measuring fallen trees. He has developed a method for identifying individual trees based on the point clouds formed by their taper curve and branching structure. The method has produced an invention announcement at the University of Eastern Finland. The reviewers of the dissertation point out that exact description of tree structure developed in the dissertation supports precision supply of timber and improves transparency of the sourcing of wood raw materials in forest bio economy. In addition, Tuomas Yrttimaa presents two automatic methods for identifying standing trees and measuring their properties based on the point clouds. These methods unify ideas presented in earlier research. The methods will be applicable also outside Finland. The dissertation was accepted with distinction.
The dissertation summary article of Dr Yrttimaa’s work was published as volume 314 in Dissertationes Forestales, which is a dissertation monograph series published by the Finnish Society of Forest Science, the University of Helsinki, and the University of Eastern Finland. It is open access with CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence.

Prize for an excellent M.Sc. thesis

The study line of Esko Karvinen is forest ecology and use of forest resources. He has gained a thorough knowledge on the scientific literature on the research topic. He applies this knowledge in an excellent manner in developing the theoretical framework of the study and discussing the results. Esko Karvinen analyses and evaluates two long time series. The methods are exceptionally well applied at the M.Sc. level. His command of management and analysis of large data sets is excellent. Esko Karvinen discusses critically his own results in the light of earlier research. Presentation, language and finishing of the thesis form a high-quality ensemble. The quality of the M.Sc. thesis of Esko Karvinen is equal to a journal article written by a professional scientist.
