Vuoden 2021 Metsätieteen päivä järjestetään 26.10.2021 webinaarina. Tänä vuonna Metsätieteen päivä kuuluu Tutkitun tiedon teemavuoden ohjelmistoon.
Tutkittu tieto ja metsien käyttö
Metsätieteen päivässä tarkastellaan tutkitun tiedon roolia metsien käytön kehittämisessä ja käytännöissä. Aamupäivän yhteiskokouksessa tarkastellaan mikä on tieteellisen tiedon rooli metsätaloudessa, tutkimusta EU:n metsäpolitiikan takana, kuullaan ekologin arvio metsänhoidon suosituksista ja tarkastellaan Suomen metsänhoidon tulevaisuutta tutkimustiedon valossa. Aamupäivän lopuksi kaikki alustajat keskustelevat yhdessä alustusten teemoista ja vastaavat yleisön kysymyksiin ja kommentteihin.
Tarjoa esitystä iltapäivän rinnakkaissessioon
Iltapäivällä Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran tieteenalakerhot järjestävät kuusi rinnakkaissessiota, joissa tarkastellaan tutkimustiedon soveltamista metsätalouden monimuotoisella kentällä. Onko sinulla uusia tutkimustuloksia tai kokemuksia tutkitun tiedon soveltamisesta metsien käytössä? Tule kertomaan uusista tutkimustuloksistasi tai siitä, miten hyödynnät tutkittua tietoa käytännön työssä yhteen iltapäivän rinnakkaissessioista. Takaraja esityksen tarjoamiselle on 22.8.2021. Call for talk proposals to Forest Science Day 26 October 2021
This year, the Forest Science Day will be organised on 26 October 2021 as a webinar. The Day will part of the programme of the Year of Research-based Knowledge.
Research-based knowledge in the use of forests
The topic of current year’s Forest Science Day deals with the role of the research-based knowledge in the use of forests, both current practices and future developments. In the talks of the morning plenary session, we hear about the role of research-based knowledge in forestry, research as a basis for EU forest policy, an ecologist’s view on Finnish forest management recommendations and the future challenges of Finnish forest management in the light of research. The plenary speakers will join a common discussion with the audience at the end of the plenary.
Submit your talk proposal to one of the afternoon parallel sessions
The science clubs of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will organise six parallel sessions in the afternoon for discussing the applications of research-based forest knowledge in the diverse field of forestry. Do you have new research results or experiences on the application of research in the forestry practice? Propose a talk on your research or experiences in one of the afternoon parallel sessions. The links to all session calls are available from this link.
The main language of the Forest Science Day is Finnish but we also welcome talks in Swedish or English. English version of the call is available to the session of the Forest Mensuration Club and the Human-Forest Relations Club. Other calls are written in Finnish only. If you cannot read Finnish, do not hesitate to contact the contact person of the session indicated on each call page. The deadline for sending the proposals is 22 August 2021.

Kevätkokouksen 6.4.2021 päätöksiä / Decisions of the Spring meeting 6 April 2021
Seuran kevätkokous pidettiin 6.4.2021 etäyhteydellä. Kokouksessa vahvistettiin vuoden 2020 tilinpäätös ja myönnettiin tili- ja vastuuvapaus Seuran hallitukselle ja muille tilivelvollisille. Kokouksessa hyväksyttiin myös Seuran sääntömuutosesitys. Seuran jäsenkokouksia on pidetty etäyhteydellä COVID 19 pandemian takia voimassaolevan poikkeuslain nojalla, mutta jatkossa etäosallistumismahdollisuus on kirjattu Seuran sääntöihin. Kokouksessa Seuran hallitusta täydennettiin valitsemalla erikoistutkija Heikki Ovaskainen (Metsäteho oy) edesmenneen Arto Kariniemen tilalle. Kokouksessa julkistettiin myös vuoden 2021 apurahan saajat ja myönnettiin opinnäytetyöpalkinnot:

The Spring meeting of our Society was on 6 April 2021 with remote connection. Closing of books 2020 was confirmed and the members present in the meeting decided to discharge the board members and other liables from responsibility on activities in 2020. The meeting accepted also changes in the by-laws of the Society. Members’ meetings of the Society have been organised recently with remote connection based on a special law in response to the COVID 19 pandemic. New by-laws allow remote participation in the members’ meetings also under normal circumstances. Special researcher Heikki Ovaskainen (Metsäteho Ltd.) was elected to the board of the Society for replacement of Arto Kariniemi who passed away in March. The names of the grantees 2021 were published in the meeting. Thesis prizes were awarded to:

Seuran tiedelehtien avoimuus- ja läpinäkyvyyslinjaukset
Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura on ollut avoimen tieteen tienraivaaja, joka on vaalinut jokamiehen oikeutta metsätieteeseen vuodesta 1998, jolloin Silva Fennican ja Metsätieteen aikakauskirjan artikkelitekstien avoin julkaiseminen Internetissä alkoi. On aika ottaa seuraava askel kohti avoimen tieteen tavoitteita parantamalla tiedelehtiemme artikkeleiden avoimuutta ja läpinäkyvyyttä. Silva Fennica on ottanut tammikuun 2021 alussa käyttöön kansainvälisen Center for Open Sciencen läpinäkyvyys- avoimuussuositukset (Transparency and Openness Promotion – TOP – guidelines; https://www.cos.io/our-services/top-guidelines) tasolla 1. Metsätieteen aikakauskirja seuraa heinäkuun 2021 alusta alkaen.
Tasolla 1 sekä Metsätieteen aikakauskirja että Silva Fennica esittävät kirjoittajaohjeissaan selkeästi toivotun tutkimusmateriaalien, -datan ja koodin avoimuuden sekä ohjeistavat läpinäkyvään kirjoittamiseen. Siihen kuuluvat mm. ohjeet nimistölähteistä ja maaperäluokituksista. Rohkaisemme myös julkaisemaan tärkeitä toistotutkimuksia, jotka auttavat vahvistamaan tai hylkäämään uusia tutkimustuloksia. Silva Fennicassa on uusi vertaisarvioitu artikkelityyppi, Data note, jossa voi kuvailla luotettavaan tietokantaan tallennetun tutkimusdatan. Kuvaus sisältää selkeän ja kattavan datan kuvauksen: aineiston keräämisen yksityiskohdat (otanta, mittaukset, datan muokkaukset, poisjätetyt havainnot jne.), datan sisällön, mahdolliset käyttötarkoitukset ja data saavutettavuutta varten tarvittavat metatiedot. Data note artikkelin julkaiseminen auttaa tutkijaa meritoitumaan datan avaamisesta.
Tammikuun 2024 alusta alkaa tiedelehtiemme uusi aika, kun siirrymme TOP-suositusten tasolle 2. Taso 2 tarkoittaa, että tutkimusmateriaalien, -datan ja koodin on oltava avoimia julkaisemisen ehtona. Avoimuudesta voidaan luopua hyvistä syistä, esimerkiksi yksityisyyden suojan tai uhanalaisten eliölajien suojelun takia. Käsikirjoituksen on seurattava viittaus- ja nimistöohjeita vertaisarvioinnin ehtona.
Uusien ohjeiden tavoitteena on parantaa tutkimuksen avoimuutta, läpinäkyvyyttä ja toistettavuutta. Odotamme, että tämä johtaa lopulta parempaan tutkimukseen metsien ja ihmisten hyväksi. Uudet ohjeet päivitetään Metsätieteen aikakauskirjan sivustolle kesäkuun aikana viimeisen oikolukemisen jälkeen. Sivustolle tulee alasvetovalikot ”Kirjoittajaohjeet” ja ”Lehden käytänteet” kuten Silva Fennican sivustolla. Kaksi kattavaa tiivistelmää uusista ohjeista on julkaistu Pekka Nygrenin (https://doi.org/10.14214/sf.10411) ja Lauri Mehtätalon (https://doi.org/10.14214/sf.10257) Silva Fennicaan kirjoittamissa pääkirjoituksissa.
Openness and transparency guidelines of the journals of our Society
Finnish Society of Forest Science has been a trailblazer of open science, cherishing Everyone’s Right to Forest Science since 1998 when the open publishing of full text articles of Silva Fennica and Metsätieteen aikakauskirja began in the Internet. It is time to take the next step towards open science with enhanced transparency and reproducibility of the articles published in our journals. From the beginning of 2021, Silva Fennica has applied the Transparency and openness promotion (TOP) guidelines of the Center for Open Science (https://www.cos.io/our-services/top-guidelines) at level 1. Metsätieteen aikakauskirja will follow starting July 2021.
Level 1 of the guidelines means that both Silva Fennica and Metsätieteen aikakauskirja articulate what kind of openness is desirable for research materials, data and code, and give instructions for transparent writing – including standards for nomenclature, soil classification etc. We also encourage submission of significant replication studies for verifying new research results. Silva Fennica has also a new peer-reviewed article type, Data note, for describing a data set deposited to a trusted open repository. They contain a clear and exhaustive description of the dataset: Details of data collection (sampling, measurements, all possible modifications, exclusions if any, etc.), its content, its potential use, and all the metadata required to access the dataset. Publishing a Data note will help scientists to get the well-earned merit for opening data.
A new era will open from 1 January 2024 onwards, as our journals will move to level 2 of TOP guidelines. Level 2 will mean that materials, data and code must be open as a condition for publishing an article. Exceptions may be accepted for good reasons e.g., for protecting privacy or threatened species. The manuscript must adhere to the citation and nomenclature guidelines before peer-review.
The objective of the new guidelines is to improve research openness, transparency and reproducibility. We expect that finally this will lead to better science for the benefit of forests and people.
