Esityskutsu Metsätieteiden päivään 2022 ”Monimuotoisuuden mittaaminen ja arvottaminen” on auki.

Metsätieteiden päivä järjestetään nyt 30. kerran Helsingin yliopiston Viikin kampuksella 26.10.2022. Päivä järjestettiin ensimmäisen kerran Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran 75-vuotisjuhlien yhteydessä vuonna 1984 ja vuodesta 1995 alkaen tilaisuus oli vuosittainen nimellä Metsätieteen päivä. Nyt 30. kerralla palautamme monikollisen nimen Metsätieteiden päivä korostaaksemme metsäntutkimuksen monitieteistä luonnetta.

Vuoden 2022 teema on ”Monimuotoisuuden mittaaminen ja arvottaminen”. Metsien monimuotoisuus muodostaa niiden toimintaa tukevan, yhteenliittyneen elämän verkon. Tämä verkko mahdollistaa metsäekosysteemien toiminnan, toipumisen häiriöistä, sopeutumisen muuttuvaan ympäristöön ja kestävän puuntuotannon. Metsätieteiden päivässä pohdimme ovatko kaikki elämän verkon solmut yhtä tärkeitä. Kysymme kuinka ”repaleisena” verkko vielä kannattelee metsän elämää. Arvioimme voiko ihminen luonnonhoidon keinoin paikata elämän verkkoa. Tarkastelemme miten näitä ilmiöitä voidaan mitata. Ennen kaikkea esitämme kysymyksen mikä on monimuotoisuuden arvo luonnolle, taloudelle ja yhteiskunnalle. Aamupäivällä on kaikille yhteinen kokous, jossa monimuotoisuustutkimuksen parhaat asiantuntijat pohtivat mm. näitä kysymyksiä.

Aamupäivän yhteiskokouksessa emme nosta esille kaikkia kysymyksiä, emmekä saa kaikkeen vastausta. Siksi iltapäivällä Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran tieteenalakerhot järjestävät kuusi rinnakkaiskokousta, joissa monimuotoisuutta, sen mittaamista ja arvottamista käsitellään metsätieteiden eri osa-alojen näkökulmasta. Onko sinulla uusia tutkimustuloksia aiheesta tai tutkimuksen soveltamisesta käytännön metsätalouteen? Tarjoa esitystäsi siihen iltapäiväkokoukseen, johon se mielestäsi lähinnä kuuluu. Alempaa löytyvät linkit jokaisen rinnakkaiskokouksen tarkempaan kuvaukseen.

Sekä aamupäivän yhteiskokous että kaikki iltapäivän rinnakkaiskokoukset järjestetään hybridimallilla, joka mahdollistaa etäosallistumisen kaikille ilmoittautuneille.

Call for presentations to the Forest Sciences’ Day “Measurement and valuation of biological diversity” is open.

Forest Sciences’ Day will be organised for the 30^th time in the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki on 26 October 2022. The Day was organised for the first time in 1984 in connection to the 75^th anniversary of the Finnish Society of Forest Science. Since 1995, the Day was organised annually under the name Forest Science Day. We will recover the original name in plural, Forest Sciences’ Day, now on the occasion of the 30^th event for emphasising the multidisciplinary nature of forest sciences.

The topic of the year 2022 will be “Measurement and valuation of biological diversity”. Diversity of forests forms the interconnected fabric of life that supports their functions. The fabric of life enables the functioning of forest ecosystems, resilience to disturbances, adaptation to environmental changes and sustainable timber production. In the Forest Sciences’ Day we will review if all nodes in the fabric of life are equally important. We will ask how much the fabric of life may be disturbed before it cannot support the life of a forest. We will evaluate if people can repair the fabric of life by means of nature management. We will have a look on the methods for measuring these phenomena. Above all, we will ask what is the value of the forest diversity for the nature, economy and society. During the morning, we will have a plenary session, in which the best experts of diversity science will answer to these and other questions.

We cannot make all important questions in the plenary, much less answer all of them. Thus, the science clubs of the Finnish Society of Forest will organise six parallel sessions in the afternoon. In these sessions, the forest diversity, its measurement and valuation will be discussed from the viewpoints of several subdisciplines of forest sciences. Do you have new research results on forest diversity or experiences on application of diversity science to forest management? Offer a talk to the parallel session that is the closest to your topic. Talks in English are warmly welcome. If you cannot read the instructions in Finnish, do not hesitate to contact the club’s contact person. They will be happy to help you.

Both the morning plenary session and afternoon parallel session will be organised in hybrid mode, which will enable remote participation all delegates that want it.

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran Viron retkeilylle 1.-3.9.2022 on vielä muutama paikka vapaana

Järjestämme syyskuun alussa kolmipäiväisen metsäretkeilyn Viroon. Ilmoittautuminen päättyi 10.5.2022, mutta muutama paikka jäi vapaaksi ja siksi ilmoittautumislomake on vielä auki reilun viikon. Vielä on siis mahdollista ilmoittautua kiinnostavalle tutustumismatkalle Viron metsiin. Tarjoamme näitä viimeisiä paikkoja ensisijaisesti Seuran jäsenille, mutta voit aivan hyvin kertoa mahdollisuudesta myös kaverille.

Retkeilyn aikana tutustumme Viron metsäntutkimukseen ja metsätalouden käytäntöön, näemme huippututkimusta modernissa laboratoriossa, koemme vanhan ajan tunnelmaa virolaisessa kartanossa ja retkeilemme virolaisessa metsässä. Retkeily järjestetään yhteistyössä Viron maatalousyliopiston metsätieteiden osaston kanssa. Ohjelmaan sisältyy:

Retkeilyn hinta on Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran jäsenille 200 / 175 € riippuen siitä yöpyykö Sagadissa kartanossa vai pehtoorintuvan hostellissa. Muille kuin Seuran jäsenille hinta on 270 / 245 €.

A few places are still available in the excursion to Estonia from 1 through 3 September 2022

Working language during the excursion will be English.

We will organise a three-day forest excursion to Estonia at the beginning of September. The official registration was closed on 10 May. However, we still have some vacancy in the excursion. Thus, the registration is still open for a bit more than a week. If you are interested, please, register soon. We offer this late registration especially for the members of our Society but feel free to inform an interested friend.

We will explore Estonian forest research and practical forestry, see top science in modern laboratories, feel old times in an Estonian manor and walk through an Estonian forest. The excursion will be organised in cooperation with the Department of Forestry at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. The programme includes:

• Forest management planning in Tornator Eesti Ltd.
• Forest research and education in the Estonian University of Life Sciences
• Research on ecology and remote sensing at the University of Tartu

We will depart from Helsinki on Thursday 1 Sep 2022 on board the 7:30 ship to Tallinn. We will lodge the first night in Hotel Dorpat in Tartu and the second in the Sagadi Manor Hotel. We will return to Helsinki on Saturday 3 Sept 2022 at 18:30.

The price of the excursion to the members of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will be 200 / 175 €, depending on the lodging in Sagadi in the Manor Hotel or in the Estate Manager’s Hostel, respectively. The price for non-members will be 270 / 245 €.

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran opinnäytetyöpalkinnot Tuomas Yrttimaalle ja Esko Karviselle

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran jakaa vuosittain opinnäytetyöpalkintoja erinomaisista edellisen vuoden aikana hyväksytyistä metsätieteen tohtorin väitöskirjoista ja pro gradu -töistä. Vuosittain palkitaan harkinnan mukainen määrän opinnäytetöitä tai tai palkinnot voidaan jättää jakamatta. Tyypillisesti väitöskirjapalkinnon on saanut vuosittain 1-2 vastaväitellyttä tohtoria ja pro gradu -palkinnon 1-3 maisteria. Vuoden 2022 palkinnot julkistettiin Seuran kevätkokouksessa 29.3.2022.

Väitöskirjapalkinnon sai MMT Tuomas Yrttimaa Itä-Suomen yliopistosta työstään ”Characterizing tree communities in space and time using point clouds”. Palkintolautakunta kiitteli työn laajuutta, jota ei oltu saavutettu syvällisyyden kustannuksella. Työ avaa uusia mahdollisuuksia käyttää pistepilviaineistoja metsäntutkimuksessa ja metsätalouden suunnittelussa. Yhdestä osatyöstä on tehty Itä-Suomen yliopistossa keksintöilmoitus.

Tuomas Yrttimaan väitöskirjan yhteenveto-osa on julkaistu Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran, Helsingin yliopiston ja Itä-Suomen yliopiston yhteisesti julkaiseman väitöskirjasarja Dissertationes Forestalesin numerossa 314. (https://doi.org/10.14214/df.314) Työ on vapaasti luettavissa, tulostettavissa ja jaettavissa CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 -lisenssin mukaan.

Pro gradu ‑palkinnon sai MMM Esko Karvinen Helsingin yliopistosta työstään ”The effects of winter temperature and shared niche on population dynamics of autumnal moth and winter moth”. Finnish Society of Forest Science awarded the thesis prizes for doctoral dissertation of Dr Tuomas Yrttimaa and for M.Sc. thesis of Esko Karvinen

Finnish Society of Forest Science awards annually prizes for excellent doctoral and Master’s theses accepted during the preceding year. The number of awards is not fixed but depends on the quality of the theses proposed in each year. Typically, the Society awards 1-2 prizes for excellent doctoral dissertations and 1-3 prizes for excellent M.Sc. theses. The prizes of 2022 were published in the Spring meeting of the Society on 29 March 2022.

The Dissertation Prize was awarded to Dr Tuomas Yrttimaa from the University of Eastern Finland for his work “Characterizing tree communities in space and time using point clouds”. The Award Committee acknowledged the wide scope of the work that was not achieved at the expense of depth. The work presents new methods for applying point cloud data in both forest research and management. one of the methods has produced an invention announcement at the University of Eastern Finland.

The dissertation summary article of Dr Yrttimaa’s work was published as volume 314 in Dissertationes Forestales (https://doi.org/10.14214/df.314), which is a dissertation monograph series published by the Finnish Society of Forest Science, the University of Helsinki, and the University of Eastern Finland. It is open access with CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence.

Tuomas Yrttimaa gave a talk on his dissertation research in the Spring Meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science on 29 March 2022. The recording may be viewed from the news page of the awards.

The prize for an excellent Master’s thesis was awarded to M.Sc. Esko Karvinen from the University of Helsinki for his research “The effects of winter temperature and shared niche on population dynamics of autumnal moth and winter moth”. Finnish Society of Forest Science organised a three-day forest excursion to Estonia at the beginning of September 2022. We saw both forest research and forestry practice in Estonia, visited modern top science laboratories, felt the old days in an Estonian mansion and hiked in a hemiboreal forest. We organised the excursion in cooperation with the forest science department of the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

Estonian Forest Service’s (Riigi Metsamajanduse Keskus, RMK) board member Kristjan Tõnisson gave us a general presentation on Estonian forest resources, their governance and challenges to the Estonian forest policy.

Chief Forester Martin Tischler (right) of Tornator Eesti OÜ guided us in the company’s forest estate in Kose and told us about the company’s forest management practices. We saw also the challenges for managing sapling stands in the hemiboreal region.

Professor Marek Metslaid (back) of the Estonian University of Life Sciences told us about forest research and higher education in Estonia.

In the second morning, we divided into three groups that familiarised with the research and education in ecology at the University of Tartu, remote sensing research at the University of Tartu and social science research of forests in Estonia. Professor Ivika Ostonen (right) presented us the soil ecology laboratory at the University of Tartu.

In the afternoon, we visited the Järvselja forestry field station of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. We saw, among other destinations, the SMEAR Eesti research facility, where the relationships between the atmosphere and hemiboreal forests is studied, and a 100-yrs old aspen stand with 1200 m³ timber per hectare.

The second night we were in the mansion-hotel Sagadi where we also had a common excursion dinner. The mansion park housed both delicately sheared trees and natural-like forests.

We hiked in the Lahemaa National Park during the last excursion day. Black alder (Alnus glutinosa) grows much bigger in Estonia than in Finland.

Prize for an excellent doctoral dissertation

Tuomas Yrttimaa, University of Eastern Finland. Characterizing tree communities in space and time using point clouds. https://doi.org/10.14214/df.314

In his dissertation research “Characterizing tree communities in space and time using point clouds”, Tuomas Yrttimaa developed innovative automatic point cloud methods for studying the structure of trees and forests. His dissertation exceeds current requirements: It is composed of five peer-reviewed articles and the extended dissertation summary. All articles were published in international journals before the dissertation date. Tuomas Yrttimaa is the first author in all of them.

Tuomas Yrttimaa presents a new method for detecting and measuring fallen trees. He has developed a method for identifying individual trees based on the point clouds formed by their taper curve and branching structure. The method has produced an invention announcement at the University of Eastern Finland. The reviewers of the dissertation point out that exact description of tree structure developed in the dissertation supports precision supply of timber and improves transparency of the sourcing of wood raw materials in forest bio economy. In addition, Tuomas Yrttimaa presents two automatic methods for identifying standing trees and measuring their properties based on the point clouds. These methods unify ideas presented in earlier research. The methods will be applicable also outside Finland. The dissertation was accepted with distinction.

In Finland, there are more than 300 learned societies with approximately 260 000 members. The question is who are the members and why they want to hold their membership? The aim of this study is to find an answer to this question. The survey is conducted by the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies which is a co-operative body for learned societies in Finland. Learned societies can use the results from this survey to develop their activities and the Federation may develop its services for the societies.

By taking part in this survey, you will give valuable information about the membership of your society. Every answer is important. It takes about 15 minutes to fill the survey. Respondents can participate in a draw of #minätutkin t-shirts and books from Tiedekirja.  

The questionnaire is open to all members of learned societies and those working as researchers in Finland. The questionnaire is available in Finnish and English and it is possible to leave comments on open questions with any language. The survey is open until the 15th of March 2022. 

Survey data will be analysed and published in a way that does not allow identification of individual respondents. Results will be published in a research report in the Publication Series of the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies. Anonymized data will be archived to the Finnish social science data archive for further research use.

Puheenjohtajan uuden vuoden tervehdys

Hyvät Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran jäsenet

Elämme edelleen poikkeuksellisia aikoja, kun koronapandemia ei vain ota laantuakseen. Pandemia on luonnollisesti aiheuttanut paljon keskustelua, mutta myös metsät ovat nousseet yhteiskunnallisen keskustelun keskiöön: metsien rooli ilmastonmuutoksen ja luontokadon torjunnassa, uusiutuvien raaka-aineiden ja hyvinvoinnin lähteenä puhuttavat. Tässä keskustelussa tarvitaan entistä enemmän tieteelliseen tutkimukseen perustuvaa tietoa ja myös eri tieteenalojen näkökulmien tarkastelua yhdessä.  Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seuran työllä on siis suuri merkitys – tukemassa niin metsätieteellistä tutkimusta kuin jokamiehen oikeutta metsätieteeseen – ja tämä toiminta jatkuu koronasta huolimatta.

Seuran apurahojen haku aukeaa taas 17.1.2022, ja samaan aikaa panostamme julkaisutoimintamme kehittämiseen ottamalla käyttöön Editorial Manager ‑järjestelmän käsikirjoitusten vastaanottamiseen ja vertaisarviointiin ja päivittämällä julkaisusivustomme. Tavoitteena on helpottaa toimituksen työtä ja tarjota entistä sujuvampi prosessi kirjoittajille ja vertaisarvioijille, jotta suomalaisen metsätieteellisen julkaisemisen taso pysyy korkeana, ja tulokset ovat kaikkien vapaasti saavutettavissa.

Seuran toiminta on myös koronasta huolimatta laajentunut uuden tieteenalaklubin myötä: 2021 perustettu Metsäsuhdeklubi tuo Seuraan lisää ihmistieteiden näkökulmaa metsiin. Yhdessä Seuran kaikki tieteenalakerhot – Metsäbiologian kerho, Metsäekonomistiklubi, Metsänhoitoklubi, Metsäsuhdeklubi, Taksaattoriklubi ja Teknologiaklubi edustavat monitieteistä metsäntutkimusta ja tarjoavat loistavan mahdollisuuden keskusteluun ajankohtaisista teemoista tutkimustiedon pohjalta – tämä näkyy mm. Metsätieteen päivän suosiona.

Metsätieteen päivät jo pari kertaa järjestetty pandemiasta johtuen webinaareina, ja ne ovat tavoittaneet ennätysyleisön. Toiveena on kuitenkin, että 2022 Metsätieteen päivässä voisimme taas tavata toisiamme myös kasvokkain. Juuri ennen pandemiaa tehdyssä jäsenkyselyssä toivottiin Seuran toimintaan myös retkeilyjä, joten – koronatilanteen sen salliessa – suunnitelmissa on järjestää metsäntutkimuksellinen retkeily Viroon kesän lopulla. Suunnitelmat tarkentuvat kevään kuluessa, eli kannattaa seurata jäsentiedotteita ja varata retki allakkaan hyvissä ajoin!

Jäsenissä on Seuran tulevaisuus, joten toivon myös, että muistatte vinkata nuorille kollegoille Seurasta ja sen toiminnasta – metsätieteelliseen yhteisöön mahtuu mukaan!

New Year’s greetings from the Chair of our Society

Dear Members of the Finnish Society of Forest Science,

We are still living in the middle of the COVID19 pandemic, without a sign of return to everyday life in the near future. There has naturally been a lot of talk on the pandemic, but also forests have been in the focus of public discussion: The role of forests in the mitigation of climate change and loss of biodiversity, and as a source of renewable raw materials and well-being is a hot topic. In this discussion, science-based information and concurrent examination of different viewpoints is needed more than ever. The work done by the Finnish Society of Forest Science i.e., supporting forest research as well as everyone’s right to forest science has thus a great significance, and this work goes on despite of the pandemic.

Our Society’s call for grant applications will open again on 17 January 2022, and at the same time we are improving our publishing services by renewing our manuscript submission and peer-review system to Editorial Manager. With this change we aim to ease editorial work, as well as to offer a more fluent process to both authors and reviewers, in order to maintain the high quality of Finnish forest science publishing and open access to research results to everyone.

Despite the pandemic, Society’s field has actually grown: Human-Forest Relationship Research Club was established in 2021.  It and all the other Clubs belonging to the Society i.e., Forest Biology Club, Forest Economist Club, Silviculture Club, Forest Mensuration Club, and Technology Club represent multidisciplinary forest research and provide an excellent platform for science-based discussion on topical themes. I think this is actually seen as the popularity of the annual Forest Science Day.

Due to the pandemic, Forest Science Day has been organized already twice as a webinar, with a record audience. I hope, however, that in 2022 we could meet face-to-face. Not only in Forest Science Day, but also in a scientific excursion. In the answers to the query made to Society’s members just before the pandemic was a wish that the Society could organize excursions or travels, and this is now in planning: An excursion to Estonia by the end of summer, if allowed by the pandemic situation. Planning of the excursion will proceed along the year, so keep following information letters!

As a final point I would like to remind that the future of the Society is its members.  So do not hesitate to tell about the Finnish Society of Forest Science to your younger colleagues and ask them to join us!

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran tutkimus- ja matka-apurahat ovat haettavissa 17.1. – 18.2.2022

Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura toimii Suomen metsätieteellisen tutkimustyön hyväksi. Tarkoituksen toteuttamiseksi Seura myöntää hallinnassaan olevien rahastojen tuotoista apurahoja metsätiedettä edistäviin tarkoituksiin: tutkimusapurahoja, matka-apurahoja, apurahoja muuhun kansainväliseen toimintaan, kieliopintoihin ja muihin metsätiedettä edistäviin toimintoihin.

Application of grants of the Finnish Society of Forest Science is open from 17 Jan. through 18 Feb. 2022

Finnish Society of Forest Science promotes forest research in Finland. As a means to reach this goal, the Society awards grants for research, travel that supports research or post-graduate studies, other international activities, language studies, and other purposes that advance forest sciences.

The application for the grants will open on 17 January and close on 18 February 2022 at 16:00. The applications must be submitted using the electronic grant application system. We kindly request you to read carefully the grant instructions on the web site of the Finnish Society of Forest Science. Please, note that the research plan for a research grant application must be written in the application form following the format given in the instructions.

Decision on the grants will be made by mid-March. We will notify grantees personally. We will publish the grants in the Spring meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science on 29 March 2022. You may start using your grant from 1 May 2022.

Reminder: Make your application for a IUFRO grant directly to Metsämiesten säätiö

The cooperation of the Finnish Society of Forest Science with the foundation Metsämiesten säätiö on grants for IUFRO activities has ended. All application for grants for IUFRO activities must be made directly to Metsämiesten säätiö. The Finnish Society of Forest Science will not award any grants for IUFRO activities in 2022. Metsämiesten säätiö receives applications from 1 December 2021 through 31 January 2022 (instructions in Finnish):

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran jäsenten ja apurahan saajien oikeus ilmaiseen julkaisemiseen Silva Fennicassa

Edellisessä jäsentiedotteessa kerroimme Silva Fennican uusista artikkelimaksuluokista kirjoittajan kotimaan tuloluokan mukaan. Koska osa Seuran jäsenmaksutuotoista käytetään Silva Fennican julkaisukuluihin, tarjoamme tietyin ehdoin jäsenillemme mahdollisuuden julkaista yhden ilmaisen artikkelin vuosittain. Jäsenen on oltava käsikirjoituksen ensimmäinen kirjoittaja. Laskemme käsikirjoitukset lähetysvuoden mukaan eli jos jäsen lähettää kalenterivuoden aikana kaksi käsikirjoitusta ja molemmat hyväksytään julkaistavaksi, jälkimmäisestä on maksettava normaali Suomen artikkelimaksu 900 €. Käsikirjoituksen lähetysvuoden jäsenmaksu (edellisen vuoden jäsenmaksu tammikuussa) on oltava maksettuna, kun lähetät käsikirjoituksen. Mikäli julkaiseminen siirtyy seuraavalle vuodelle, myös julkaisuvuoden jäsenmaksu on maksettava ennen artikkelin julkaisemista. Kaikki jäsenten tarjoamat käsikirjoitukset tarkastetaan Silva Fennican normaalissa vertaisarvioinnissa.

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran tutkimusapurahaan sisältyy mahdollisuus julkaista apurahatyöhön perustuva artikkeli ilmaiseksi Silva Fennicassa. Käsikirjoitus on lähetettävä julkaisuharkintaan enintään 12 kuukautta apurahakauden päättymisen jälkeen, sen on perustuttava pääosin apurahalla tehtyyn tutkimukseen ja apurahan saajan on oltava ensimmäinen kirjoittaja. Kaikki apurahan saajien käsikirjoitukset tarkastetaan Silva Fennican normaalissa vertaisarvioinnissa.

Right of the members and grantees of the Finnish Society of Forest Science for APC-free publication in Silva Fennica

We informed about the new article processing charge (APC) classes of Silva Fennica in our previous Information letter. The classes are based on the World Bank classification of country income. Because a part of the membership fees on our Society are used for funding Silva Fennica, our members have the possibility to publish an APC-free article per year. The member must be the first author of the manuscript. We count the manuscripts per year of submission. Thus, if a member submits two manuscripts during the same calendar year and both are accepted, the latter is subject to the APC of Finland, 900 €. The membership fee of the year of submission (previous year in January) must be paid on the date of submission. If the article is published on the following year, the membership fee of the year of publication must be paid before publication. All manuscript submitted by our members will be submitted to the normal peer-review of Silva Fennica.

A research grant of the Finnish Society of Forest Science includes the possibility to publish an APC-free article in Silva Fennica. The manuscript must be submitted not later than 12 months after the end of the grant period, it must be based mostly on research supported by the grant and the grantee must be the first author. All manuscripts of the grantees will be submitted to the normal peer-review of Silva Fennica.

Metsäbiologian kerhon vuosikokous ja seminaari ”Metsäsertifiointistandardien uudistukset ja luonnon monimuotoisuuden huomioiminen metsätaloudessa” järjestetään 25.1.2022 klo 16.30 – 20.00 Aalto-yliopiston Töölön kampuksella (Runeberginkatu 14-16, Helsinki), salissa A311. Seminaari pidetään klo 16.30 – 19.00 ja vuosikokous klo 19.00 – 20.00. Annual meeting of the Forest Biology Club and seminar “Renewing forest certification standards and biodiversity in forestry” will be organised on 25 Jan 2022 from 16:30 through 20:00 in the Töölö Campus of Aalto University, Room A311 (Runebergin katu 14-16, Helsinki). Seminar will be from 16:30 through 19:00 and the annual meeting will follow. The seminar will be in Finnish.

Taksaattoriklubin kevätkokous ja ‑seminaari 22.3.2022 / Spring meeting and seminar of Forest Mensuration Club on 22 March 2022

Taksaattoriklubin kevätkokous ja ‑seminaari järjestetään 22.3.2022 klo 9.00 ‑ 11.30 Teams-webinaarina. Ohjelma ja ilmoittautumislinkki tulevat Seuran tapahtumakalenteriin. Klubi suunnittelee myös kaikille avointa seminaaria, jossa julkistetaan Juha Lapin avoimen lähdekoodin JLP ohjelmisto ja sen käyttöön tehty R-paketti. Ajankohta on kevättalvi 2022. Spring meeting and webinar of Forest Mensuration Club will be on 22 March 2022 from 9:00 through 11:30. The event will be organised with Teams. The programme and the registration link will be published in our Calendar of Activities. The Club is planning also an open seminar, in which the open source JLP programmes developed by Juha Lappi and the R package for their implementation will be published. Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran sääntömääräinen kevätkokous pidetään 29.3.2022 klo 15.00 alkaen hybriditilaisuutena. Fyysinen pitopaikka Helsingissä ja rekisteröitymislinkki etäosallistumista varten ilmoitetaan virallisessa kevätkokouskutsussa viimeistään kaksi viikkoa ennen kokousta. Kokouksessa käsitellään ääntömääräiset kevätkokousasiat, jaetaan apurahat ja opinnäytetyöpalkinnot sekä kuullaan opinnäytetyöpalkinnon saajan pitämä kevätkokousesitelmä.

The statutory Spring meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will be on 29 March 2022 from 15:00 as a hybrid event. The physical location in Helsinki and the registration link for remote participation will be given in the official invitation to the Spring meeting, at latest two weeks before the event. The agenda will include statutory Spring meeting items e.g., acceptance of the annual report and closing of books 2021, award of grants and thesis prizes and the Spring meeting talk by a winner or winners of thesis prize.

Syyskokouksen 9.12.2021 päätöksiä

Seuran syyskokous pidettiin 9.12.2021 Helsingin yliopiston Viikin kampuksella läsnäolotilaisuutena koronaturvallisin järjestelyin. Kokouksessa käytiin vilkas keskustelu Seuran toimintasuunnitelmasta 2022. Parin vuoden pandemiasta toipumisen jälkeen Seura lisää läsnäolotilaisuuksia, opettelee hybriditapahtumien järjestämisen ja seuraa juuri ennen pandemiaa toteutetun jäsenkyselyn tuloksia.

Kokouksessa tehtiin seuraavat henkilövalinnat:

• puheenjohtaja 2022: johtava tutkija Tuija Aronen, Luonnonvarakeskus
• varapuheenjohtaja 2022: yliopistonlehtori Marjo Palviainen, Helsingin yliopisto
• hallituksen jäsenet 2022 – 2024: vanhempi metsäekonomisti Jani Laturi, Pellervon taloustutkimus PTT ja erikoistutkija Sakari Tuominen, Luonnonvarakeskus (toinen kausi)

Seuran tilintarkastajaksi valittiin tilintarkastusyhteisö PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Koska kyseessä on tilintarkastuslain mukainen tilintarkastusyhteisö, varatilintarkastajaa ei valittu. Toiminnantarkastajaksi valittiin tutkija Jussi Leppänen, Luonnonvarakeskus ja varatoiminnantarkastajaksi tutkija Jussi Lintunen, Luonnonvarakeskus.

Kokous päätti pitää jäsenmaksut ennallaan: varsinaiset jäsenet 50 € vuodessa ja kannattajajäsenet 800 € vuodessa.

Decisions of the Autumn Meeting 9 December 2021

The Autumn Meeting of our Society was organised on 9 December 2021 in the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki. The meeting was a face-to-face event with COVID-19 safe measures. We had a lively discussion on the plan of activities 2022. After the two pandemic-marked years, the Society will organise face-to-face meetings, learn the hybrid meeting techniques and we will better observe the results of the members’ query, organised just a few weeks before to beginning of the pandemic.

The following elections were done in the meeting:

Auditing community PricewaterhouseCoopers was elected as the Auditor of Accounts of the Society. Because the auditor is an auditing community, vice auditor was not elected. Mr Jussi Leppänen, Natural Resources Institute Finland, was elected as the Auditor of Activities and Dr Jussi Lintunen, Natural Resources Institute Finland, as the Vice-Auditor of Activities.

The annual membership fee will be retained at 50 € for ordinary members and at 800 € for supporting members.

Seuran julkaisualustan uusiminen

Tulevan vuoden alkupuolella julkaisemme uuden julkaisualustamme. Näkyvin muutos on käsikirjoitusten vastaanotto- ja vertaisarviointijärjestelmän vaihtuminen yhdeksän vuotta käytössä olleesta avoimen koodin OJS:stä (Open Journal Systems) monista tiedelehdistä tuttuun Editorial Manager ‑järjestelmään. Pääsyynä muutokseen on kirjoittajien ja etenkin tarkastajien tyytymättömyys OJS:n toimintaan. Sen epäselvät virheilmoitukset ovat johtaneet syötetyn tiedon häviämiseen ja välillä on ilmennyt selittämättömiä virheitä, jotka eivät jätä merkintää järjestelmän seurantalokiin. Lisäksi systeemi on ohjelmoitu niin, että osa pienistäkin muutoksista vaatii tietokannan muokkaamista. Sen voi tehdä vain järjestelmänvalvoja (IT-assistenttimme) ja muutos saattaa hävitä järjestelmäpäivityksessä.

Varsinainen julkaisusivustomme, jonka kautta luet Silva Fennicaa, Metsätieteen aikakauskirjaa tai Dissertationes Forestalesia, on toiminut moitteettomasti. Se on kuitenkin osittain linkitetty OJS:ään – tärkeimpänä linkkinä artikkelin metatietojen luku suoraan OJS:stä julkaisusivustolle. Se on siis ohjelmoitava uudelleen. Koska vuonna 2012 luotu ja 2016 muokattu sivusto on jo osin vanhaa ohjelmointitekniikkaa, päätimme uusia koodin kokonaisuudessaan. Jatkossa artikkelien julkaisusivusto on kokonaan itsenäinen käsikirjoitusjärjestelmästä. Julkaisusivuston muutokset näkyvät käyttäjälle vähäisinä, mutta pyrimme muutoksilla entistä parempaan luotettavuuteen, tietoturvaan ja hakukonelöydettävyyteen.

Updates in the publication platform of our Society

We will publish our new publishing platform early next year. The most visible improvement will be the change of the manuscript submission and peer-review system from the open source OJS (Open Journal Systems) to Editorial Manager, which you probably have used with some other scientific journals. Main reasons for abandoning OJS after nine years of use is growing discontent among authors and reviewers on the functioning of the system. Unclear error messages have caused loss of content in the middle of upload and some errors have occurred without any mark in the system log. Some simple modification may require changes in the underlying data base. Only our system administrator may modify the data base and modifications may be lost in a following system upgrade.

Our publishing site, which you use for reading Silva Fennica, Metsätieteen aikakauskirja and Dissertationes Forestales, has worked well. However, it is partially linked with OJS. The most notable link is reading of article meta data from OJS to the publication page. Thus, it must be reprogrammed. The site was coded in 2012 and a major upgrade was done in 2016. Thus, we decided to recode completely the site. The new site will be totally independent from the manuscript processing system. Most changes in the publication pages will be invisible to the users. The new publication site will be even more secure and reliable than the current version and it will be better optimised for search engines.

Silva Fennian uudet artikkelimaksuluokat

Silva Fennica siirtyy käyttämään artikkelimaksuporrastusta kirjoittajien kotimaan tulotason mukaan. Käytämme artikkelimaksun määrittelyssä aina Maailmanpankin luokitusta käsikirjoituksen vastaanottopäivänä. Maksun määrittelee ensimmäisen ja vastuukirjoittajan organisaation kotimaa. Uudet maksuluokat ovat:

• Korkean tulotason maat: 900 €
• Ylemmän keskituloluokan maat: 600 €
• Alemman keskituloluokan ja alhaisen tulotason maat: ilmainen

Uudistuksen tavoitteena on houkutella enemmän käsikirjoituksia ylemmän keskituloluokan tärkeistä metsätalousmaista, joista Brasilia yksin tuottaa 10 % maailman metsätieteellisistä julkaisuista. Korkean tulotason maiden uusi maksu (100 € korotus nykyiseen) koskee 1.2.2022 ja sen jälkeen vastaanotettuja käsikirjoituksia. Ylemmän keskituloluokan maiden uusi maksuluokka (200 € alennus nykyiseen) koskee kaikkia vuonna 2022 julkaistavia artikkeleita, jotka on otettu vastaan 1.7.2021 tai sen jälkeen.

Seuran jäsenten oikeus yhteen ilmaiseen artikkeliin vuosittain ensimmäisenä kirjoittajana pysyy voimassa.

New article processing charge classes of Silva Fennica

Silva Fennica will introduce new article processing charge (APC) classes. The APC will be determined according to first and corresponding author’s organisations’ home country. The World Bank classification on the day of submission will be applied. The new APC classes are:

• High income countries: 900 €
• Upper-middle income countries: 600 €
• Lower-middle income and low income countries: free

The aim of the new APC classes is to attract more submissions from important upper-middle income forestry countries. For example, Brazil alone produces 10 % of World’s forestry publications. The new APC for high income countries (100 € up from current level) will be effective for manuscripts submitted on or after 1 February 2022. The new APC for upper-middle income countries (200 € down from current level) will be applied for manuscripts published in 2022 and received on or after 1 July 2021.

The right of the members of our Society to publish a free article per year as the first author will remain.

Retkeily Viroon 2022 / Excursion to Estonia in 2022

Seuran syyskokous päätti hallituksen esityksestä, että teemme vuonna 2022 metsätalous- ja tutkimusaiheisen retkeilyn Viroon. Retkeily järjestetään, jos ilmoittautuneita on vähintään 30 ja osallistujamäärän ylärajana on bussillinen matkalaisia. Pääyhteistyökumppanimme on Viron maatalousyliopiston metsätalouden laitos. Ohjelmaan on suunniteltu myös vierailu Tarton yliopistossa ja Viron metsähallituksessa, maastokohteita unohtamatta. Suunniteltu ajankohta on kolmen päivän retkeily elokuussa. Retkeilyn tarkempi suunnittelu aloitetaan ensi vuoden alussa ja tiedotamme järjestelyjen edistymisestä ennen kaikkea jäsentiedottein, mutta valitut palat tulevat myös Twitter-tilillemme @MetsatSeura.

The Autumn Meeting decided, on proposal of the Board of our Society, that we will organise a forest and science excursion to Estonia in 2022. The minimum number of participants will be 30 and the upper limit will be a busful of excursionists. Our main collaborator is the Forestry Department at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. We are planning also visits to the University of Tartu and Estonian State Forest Management Centre, and several field sites. Initially, we are planning a three-day excursion in August. The detailed excursion planning will begin early next year. We will inform you with information letters and the best pieces will appear on our Twitter account @MetsatSeura.

Autumn meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will be held on Thursday 9 December 2021 at 15:00 in Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki, in Room 340 of the Forest Science Building (Viikinkaari 7). The meeting is open for all ordinary and honorary members of the Society, and to the representatives of supporting members who must present an authorisation from the supporting member.

Programme

1.   Opening of the meeting

2.   Election of the meeting chair, secretary, reviewers of the minutes, and voice counters.

3.   Confirmation of the legality and quorum of the meeting.

4.   Acceptance of the programme.

5.   Confirmation of the Plan of activities 2022, Budget 2022 and the membership fee for 2022.

6.   Election of the chair and vice-chair of the Society for 2022 and board members for term 2022 – 2024. Current board members whose term is ending are Matleena Kniivilä and Sakari Tuominen. According to the 6^th § of the statutes of the Society, Matleena Kniivilä cannot be re-elected. The proposal of a work group searching for candidates is:

• Chair 2022: Dr Tuija Aronen, Natural Resources Institute Finland
• Vice Chair 2022: Dr Marjo Palviainen, University of Helsinki

Members of the Society who have the voting right may present other candidates in the meeting.

• If a member wants to propose a topic that requires a decision of a members’ meeting of the Society, they should send an e-mail detailing the topic to the Executive Manager of the Society (pekka.nygren@metsatiede.org) at latest on 25 November 2021. Discussion topics may also be proposed after that, at latest on site at the time of the acceptance of the meeting programme.

Topic of current year’s Forest Science Day was “Research-Based Knowledge in the Use of Forests”. All talks of the morning plenary session and most talks of the afternoon parallel sessions were recorded. The recordings are available on the Forest Science Day site. Forest Science Day is organised with funding from the foundation Metsämiesten säätiö and it is a part of the activities of the Year of Research-Based Knowledge.
