Syyskokouksen 9.12.2021 päätöksiä

Seuran syyskokous pidettiin 9.12.2021 Helsingin yliopiston Viikin kampuksella läsnäolotilaisuutena koronaturvallisin järjestelyin. Kokouksessa käytiin vilkas keskustelu Seuran toimintasuunnitelmasta 2022. Parin vuoden pandemiasta toipumisen jälkeen Seura lisää läsnäolotilaisuuksia, opettelee hybriditapahtumien järjestämisen ja seuraa juuri ennen pandemiaa toteutetun jäsenkyselyn tuloksia.

Kokouksessa tehtiin seuraavat henkilövalinnat:

  • puheenjohtaja 2022: johtava tutkija Tuija Aronen, Luonnonvarakeskus
  • varapuheenjohtaja 2022: yliopistonlehtori Marjo Palviainen, Helsingin yliopisto
  • hallituksen jäsenet 2022 – 2024: vanhempi metsäekonomisti Jani Laturi, Pellervon taloustutkimus PTT ja erikoistutkija Sakari Tuominen, Luonnonvarakeskus (toinen kausi)

Seuran tilintarkastajaksi valittiin tilintarkastusyhteisö PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Koska kyseessä on tilintarkastuslain mukainen tilintarkastusyhteisö, varatilintarkastajaa ei valittu. Toiminnantarkastajaksi valittiin tutkija Jussi Leppänen, Luonnonvarakeskus ja varatoiminnantarkastajaksi tutkija Jussi Lintunen, Luonnonvarakeskus.

Kokous päätti pitää jäsenmaksut ennallaan: varsinaiset jäsenet 50 € vuodessa ja kannattajajäsenet 800 € vuodessa.

Decisions of the Autumn Meeting 9 December 2021

The Autumn Meeting of our Society was organised on 9 December 2021 in the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki. The meeting was a face-to-face event with COVID-19 safe measures. We had a lively discussion on the plan of activities 2022. After the two pandemic-marked years, the Society will organise face-to-face meetings, learn the hybrid meeting techniques and we will better observe the results of the members’ query, organised just a few weeks before to beginning of the pandemic.

The following elections were done in the meeting:

  • Chair 2022: Dr Tuija Aronen, Natural Resources Institute Finland
  • Vice Chair 2022: Dr Marjo Palviainen, University of Helsinki
  • board member 2022 – 2024: Dr Jani Laturi, Pellervo Economic Research PTT and Dr Sakari Tuominen, Natural Resources Institute Finland (second term)

Auditing community PricewaterhouseCoopers was elected as the Auditor of Accounts of the Society. Because the auditor is an auditing community, vice auditor was not elected. Mr Jussi Leppänen, Natural Resources Institute Finland, was elected as the Auditor of Activities and Dr Jussi Lintunen, Natural Resources Institute Finland, as the Vice-Auditor of Activities.

The annual membership fee will be retained at 50 € for ordinary members and at 800 € for supporting members.

Seuran julkaisualustan uusiminen

Tulevan vuoden alkupuolella julkaisemme uuden julkaisualustamme. Näkyvin muutos on käsikirjoitusten vastaanotto- ja vertaisarviointijärjestelmän vaihtuminen yhdeksän vuotta käytössä olleesta avoimen koodin OJS:stä (Open Journal Systems) monista tiedelehdistä tuttuun Editorial Manager ‑järjestelmään.

Jatkossa artikkelien julkaisusivusto on kokonaan itsenäinen käsikirjoitusjärjestelmästä. Julkaisusivuston muutokset näkyvät käyttäjälle vähäisinä, mutta pyrimme muutoksilla entistä parempaan luotettavuuteen, tietoturvaan ja hakukonelöydettävyyteen.

Updates in the publication platform of our Society

We will publish our new publishing platform early next year. The most visible improvement will be the change of the manuscript submission and peer-review system from the open source OJS (Open Journal Systems) to Editorial Manager, which you probably have used with some other scientific journals. Main reasons for abandoning OJS after nine years of use is growing discontent among authors and reviewers on the functioning of the system. Unclear error messages have caused loss of content in the middle of upload and some errors have occurred without any mark in the system log. Some simple modification may require changes in the underlying data base. Only our system administrator may modify the data base and modifications may be lost in a following system upgrade.

Our publishing site, which you use for reading Silva Fennica, Metsätieteen aikakauskirja and Dissertationes Forestales, has worked well. However, it is partially linked with OJS. The most notable link is reading of article meta data from OJS to the publication page. Thus, it must be reprogrammed. The site was coded in 2012 and a major upgrade was done in 2016. Thus, we decided to recode completely the site. The new site will be totally independent from the manuscript processing system. Most changes in the publication pages will be invisible to the users. The new publication site will be even more secure and reliable than the current version and it will be better optimised for search engines.

__________

Silva Fennian uudet artikkelimaksuluokat

Silva Fennica siirtyy käyttämään artikkelimaksuporrastusta kirjoittajien kotimaan tulotason mukaan. Käytämme artikkelimaksun määrittelyssä aina Maailmanpankin luokitusta käsikirjoituksen vastaanottopäivänä. Maksun määrittelee ensimmäisen ja vastuukirjoittajan organisaation kotimaa. Uudet maksuluokat ovat:

  • Korkean tulotason maat: 900 €
  • Ylemmän keskituloluokan maat: 600 €
  • Alemman keskituloluokan ja alhaisen tulotason maat: ilmainen

Uudistuksen tavoitteena on houkutella enemmän käsikirjoituksia ylemmän keskituloluokan tärkeistä metsätalousmaista, joista Brasilia yksin tuottaa 10 % maailman metsätieteellisistä julkaisuista.

__________

New article processing charge classes of Silva Fennica

Silva Fennica will introduce new article processing charge (APC) classes. The APC will be determined according to first and corresponding author’s organisations’ home country. The World Bank classification on the day of submission will be applied. The new APC classes are:

  • High income countries: 900 €
  • Upper-middle income countries: 600 €
  • Lower-middle income and low income countries: free

The aim of the new APC classes is to attract more submissions from important upper-middle income forestry countries. For example, Brazil alone produces 10 % of World’s forestry publications. The new APC for high income countries (100 € up from current level) will be effective for manuscripts submitted on or after 1 February 2022. The new APC for upper-middle income countries (200 € down from current level) will be applied for manuscripts published in 2022 and received on or after 1 July 2021.

The right of the members of our Society to publish a free article per year as the first author will remain.

Retkeily Viroon 2022 / Excursion to Estonia in 2022

Pääyhteistyökumppanimme on Viron maatalousyliopiston metsätalouden laitos. Suunniteltu ajankohta on kolmen päivän retkeily elokuussa. Retkeilyn tarkempi suunnittelu aloitetaan ensi vuoden alussa ja tiedotamme järjestelyjen edistymisestä ennen kaikkea jäsentiedottein, mutta valitut palat tulevat myös Twitter-tilillemme @MetsatSeura.

The Autumn Meeting decided, on proposal of the Board of our Society, that we will organise a forest and science excursion to Estonia in 2022. The minimum number of participants will be 30 and the upper limit will be a busful of excursionists. Our main collaborator is the Forestry Department at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. We are planning also visits to the University of Tartu and Estonian State Forest Management Centre, and several field sites. Initially, we are planning a three-day excursion in August. The detailed excursion planning will begin early next year. We will inform you with information letters and the best pieces will appear on our Twitter account @MetsatSeura.

Seuran tiedelehtien avoimuus- ja läpinäkyvyyslinjaukset

Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura on ollut avoimen tieteen tienraivaaja, joka on vaalinut jokamiehen oikeutta metsätieteeseen vuodesta 1998, jolloin Silva Fennican ja Metsätieteen aikakauskirjan artikkelitekstien avoin julkaiseminen Internetissä alkoi. On aika ottaa seuraava askel kohti avoimen tieteen tavoitteita parantamalla tiedelehtiemme artikkeleiden avoimuutta ja läpinäkyvyyttä. Silva Fennica on ottanut tammikuun 2021 alussa käyttöön kansainvälisen Center for Open Sciencen läpinäkyvyys- avoimuussuositukset (Transparency and Openness Promotion – TOP – guidelines; https://www.cos.io/our-services/top-guidelines) tasolla 1.

Data note artikkelin julkaiseminen auttaa tutkijaa meritoitumaan datan avaamisesta.

Openness and transparency guidelines of the journals of our Society

Finnish Society of Forest Science has been a trailblazer of open science, cherishing Everyone’s Right to Forest Science since 1998 when the open publishing of full text articles of Silva Fennica and Metsätieteen aikakauskirja began in the Internet. It is time to take the next step towards open science with enhanced transparency and reproducibility of the articles published in our journals. From the beginning of 2021, Silva Fennica has applied the Transparency and openness promotion (TOP) guidelines of the Center for Open Science (https://www.cos.io/our-services/top-guidelines) at level 1. Metsätieteen aikakauskirja will follow starting July 2021.

Level 1 of the guidelines means that both Silva Fennica and Metsätieteen aikakauskirja articulate what kind of openness is desirable for research materials, data and code, and give instructions for transparent writing – including standards for nomenclature, soil classification etc. We also encourage submission of significant replication studies for verifying new research results. Silva Fennica has also a new peer-reviewed article type, Data note, for describing a data set deposited to a trusted open repository. They contain a clear and exhaustive description of the dataset: Details of data collection (sampling, measurements, all possible modifications, exclusions if any, etc.), its content, its potential use, and all the metadata required to access the dataset. Publishing a Data note will help scientists to get the well-earned merit for opening data.

A new era will open from 1 January 2024 onwards, as our journals will move to level 2 of TOP guidelines. Level 2 will mean that materials, data and code must be open as a condition for publishing an article. Exceptions may be accepted for good reasons e.g., for protecting privacy or threatened species. The manuscript must adhere to the citation and nomenclature guidelines before peer-review.

The objective of the new guidelines is to improve research openness, transparency and reproducibility. We expect that finally this will lead to better science for the benefit of forests and people. You can read the new “Author guidelines” and “Journal policies” by clicking the respective top panel buttons in the website https://silvafennica.fi. Finnish Society of Forest Science awarded the thesis prizes for doctoral dissertations of Dr Jiri Pyörälä and Dr Kaisa Rissanen, and for M.Sc. thesis of Hanna Joronen

Finnish Society of Forest Science awards annually prizes for excellent doctoral and Master’s theses accepted during the preceding year. This year, prizes for excellent doctoral dissertations were awarded to Dr Jiri Pyörälä for his work “Assessing wood properties in standing timber with laser scanning” and Dr Kaisa Rissanen for her work “Scots pine resin and BVOC emissions in relation to tree water dynamics”. Ms Hanna Joronen received the prize for her M.Sc. thesis “Factors affecting bending strength and modulus of elasticity in juvenile and mature wood of downy birch and modelling them with linear mixed-effect models” (in Finnish).

Finnish Society of Forest Science awards annually prizes for excellent doctoral and Master’s theses accepted during the preceding year. The awards are made among the theses proposed by the Department of Forest Sciences at the University of Helsinki and the School of Forest Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland. The number of awards is not fixed but depends on the quality of the theses proposed in each year. Typically, the Society awards 1-2 prizes for excellent doctoral dissertations and 1-3 prizes for excellent M.Sc. theses.

The prizes of 2021 were published in the Spring meeting of the Society on 6 April 2021. Dissertation prize awardees gave a talk on their theses. The presentation recordings will be uploaded on this page.

Prize for an excellent doctoral dissertation

Jiri Pyörälä, University of Helsinki. Assessing wood properties in standing timber with laser scanning. https://doi.org/10.14214/df.295

Dr Jiri Pöyrälä’s doctoral dissertation is multidisciplinary combining remote sensing, forest management planning and wood science. His work is innovative applying forest remote sensing to new problems. He brings the traditional remote sensing of stands and trees inside the forest and studies the tree organs. Jiri Pyörälä develops methods for studying in situ such individual tree properties that are described by modelling in traditional remote sensing based forest mensuration. The pre-examiners and the opponent of Jiri Pyörälä in the public defence paid special attention to the originality of the research problem and management of complex research problems. The dissertation was approved with distinction. In relation to the current requirements set for dissertations, the doctoral dissertation of Jiri Pyörälä is extensive. The dissertation is based on five partial publications. On the hand, the dissertation is an appropriately defined and clear entirety.

The dissertation summary article of Dr Pyörälä’s work was published as volume 295 in Dissertationes Forestales, which is a dissertation monograph series published by the Finnish Society of Forest Science, the University of Helsinki, and the University of Eastern Finland. It is open access with CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence.

Recording of the talk of Jiri Pyörälä on his award-winning thesis in the Spring Meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science can be viewed here.

Kaisa Rissanen, University of Helsinki. Scots pine resin and BVOC emissions in relation to tree water dynamics. https://doi.org/10.14214/df.283

Dr Kaisa Rissanen studied the effects of environmental factors and tree physiology on functions of resin and emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). The results may be applied for improving models of VOCs and they enhance understanding of the effects of environmental factors on defensive mechanisms of Scots pine. Emissions of BVOCs have an impact on climate warming by modifying the dynamics of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere e.g., the residence time of methane in the atmosphere, aerosol cloud formation, and albedo. The dissertation is innovative: The BVOC emissions from tree stems is a little studied phenomenon. Kaisa Rissanen developed new methods for measuring resin pressure and following BVOC emissions with continuously running mass spectrometers and dynamic chambers. She had an independent role in the development of the methodology, data analysis and writing. Structural equation models (SEMs) were used in data analysis for revealing the direct and indirect environmental effects (interactions, causalities) on BVOC emissions. The dissertation was accepted with distinction. The dissertation is composed of four articles. Kaisa Rissanen is the first author in all of them.

The dissertation summary article of Dr Rissanen’s work was published as volume 283 in Dissertationes Forestales, which is a dissertation monograph series published by the Finnish Society of Forest Science, the University of Helsinki, and the University of Eastern Finland. It is open access with CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence.

Recording of the talk of Kaisa Rissanen on her award-winning thesis in the Spring Meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science can be viewed here.

Prize for an excellent M.Sc. thesis

Hanna Joronen, University of Eastern Finland. [Factors affecting bending strength and modulus of elasticity in juvenile and mature wood of downy birch and modelling them with linear mixed-effect models.] https://erepo.uef.fi/handle/123456789/23573 (in Finnish)

Hanna Joronen made her master’s degree with specialisation in forest, energy and wood technology. Her thesis is extensive. Hanna Joronen knows the pertinent literature well and applies this knowledge in an excellent manner in her thesis. The work includes demanding data analyses applying a linear mixed model approach. The modelling is especially well done at the master’s level. Presentation, use of Finnish language and finalisation of the thesis are excellent. Hanna Joronen shows that she can manage and analyse large data sets. The discussion of the thesis shows maturity in the comparison of own results with prior knowledge.

Metsätieteen päivä on hyväksytty osaksi Tutkitun tiedon teemavuoden ohjelmistoa

Metsätieteen päivä 26.10.2021 järjestetään webinaarina. Päivän järjestelytyöryhmä kokoontuu pian päättämään tämän vuoden teemasta. Metsätieteen päivä on hyväksytty osaksi Tutkitun tiedon teemavuoden ohjelmaa.

Tutkitulle tiedolle on tilaa – nyt, jos koskaan. Tutkitun tiedon teemavuonna 2021 kotimaiset toimijat tuovat yhdessä tutkittua tietoa meille kaikille.

Forest Science Day is accepted to the programme of the Year of Research-Based Knowledge

Forest Science Day will be on 26 October 2021 in the webinar format. The working group organising the event will soon decide the topic of this year. Forest Science Day is accepted to the programme of the Year of Research-Based Knowledge.

The Year of Research-Based Knowledge is a joint initiative organised by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Academy of Finland and the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies. Its aim is to make research-based knowledge even more visible and accessible, and to intensify the collaboration between organisations working with research-based knowledge. The year gathers actions and events into a programme that gives a comprehensive view of research-based knowledge and its role, for example, in the wellbeing of individuals and in the functioning of society. The Year of Research-Based Knowledge will increase the visibility of different sources of knowledge, including statistics, reports and analyses, as well as highlight the fundamental nature of knowledge, where knowledge is updated as new research results emerge. The year is aimed at everyone living in Finland as well as at decision-makers and business and industry. A specific aim is to provide children and young people with creativity, inspiration and hope for the future.

Our participation in the Year of Research-Based Knowledge will enhance the Everyone’s Right to Research-Based Knowledge on Forests.

Metsäsuhdeklubi / Forest relations – a new club in our Society

Seuran yhteyteen on perustettu uusi tieteenalakerho, Metsäsuhdeklubi. Metsäsuhdeklubi on Seuran kuudes tieteenalakerho. Klubi on jo suunnittelemassa ohjelmaa Metsätieteen päivään 26.10.2021.

Metsäsuhdeklubin rinnalla toimiva Metsäsuhdeverkosto on puolestaan avoin, matalan kynnyksen verkosto kaikille ihmistieteellisestä metsään liittyvästä tutkimuksesta kiinnostuneille tai sitä tekeville. Metsäsuhdeverkosto perustettiin Lustossa pidetyssä metsäsuhdetutkimuksen avausseminaarissa 10.-11.9.2020, johon osallistui 34 tutkijaa 26 tutkimushankkeesta ja seitsemästä yliopistosta ja tutkimuslaitoksesta.

Klubin ensimmäinen puheenjohtaja on talous- ja sosiaalihistorian yliopistonlehtori Jaana Laine Helsingin yliopistosta.

A new science club has been established in our Society, Metsäsuhdeklubi, or a Club for human-forest relationship research. The new club complements our activities in humanities, behavioural psychology and social sciences. This will enhance research on the human-forest interactions. We also hope that the new club will strengthen research cooperation on these important topics. The Club for human-forest relationships is the sixth science club within our Society.

The club works in cooperation with Metsäsuhdeverkosto, which is an open network of scholars studying the human-forest interface and relations.

The first chair of the club is Senior Lecturer (Economic and Social History) Jaana Laine from the University of Helsinki.
