Kutsu syyskokoukseen 10.12.2020

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran sääntömääräinen syyskokous pidetään etäkokouksena torstaina 10.12.2020 klo 16.00 alkaen. Etäkokous lähetetään Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran toimistosta, Viikinkaari 6, Helsinki. Etäyhteyttä varten kokoukseen on ilmoittauduttava viimeistään 3.12.2020 tällä linkillä.

Kaikille määräaikaan mennessä ilmoittautuneille lähetetään Zoom-linkki kalenterikutsuna. Huomaathan, että kokous on tarkoitettu vain Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran varsinaisille jäsenille, kunniajäsenille ja kannattajajäsenten edustajille, joiden on esitettävä valtakirja.

Käsiteltävät asiat

1. Kokouksen avaus
2. Kokouksen puheenjohtajan, sihteerin, pöytäkirjan tarkastajien ja ääntenlaskijoiden valinta.
3. Kokouksen laillisuuden ja päätösvaltaisuuden toteaminen.
4. Kokouksen työjärjestyksen hyväksyminen.
5. Vahvistetaan Seuran toimintasuunnitelma (Liite 1), tulo- ja menoarvio (Liite 2) sekä jäsenmaksujen suuruus vuodelle 2021.
6. Valitaan Seuran hallituksen puheenjohtaja ja varapuheenjohtaja vuodelle 2021 sekä kahden hallituksen jäsenen erovuoroisten Arto Kariniemen ja Anna Revon tilalle kaudelle 2021 – 2023. Seuran sääntöjen 6 § mukaan molemmat voidaan valita uudelleen. Hallituksen jäsenehdokkaita etsineen työryhmän esitys on:
   – puheenjohtaja 2021: johtava tutkija Tuija Aronen, Luonnonvarakeskus
   – varapuheenjohtaja 2021: yliopistotutkija Marjo Palviainen, Helsingin yliopisto
   – hallituksen jäsenet 2021 – 2023: MMT, VTM Arto Kariniemi ja tutkija Anna Repo, Luonnonvarakeskus
   Kokoukseen osallistuvat Seuran äänivaltaiset jäsenet voivat tehdä muita ehdotuksia avoimiin tehtäviin.
7. Valitaan tilintarkastaja ja toiminnantarkastaja sekä tarvittaessa heille varahenkilöt vuodelle 2021. Ehdotukset ovat:
   – tilintarkastaja: tilintarkastusyhteisö PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)
   – Koska ehdotettu tilintarkastaja on tilintarkastuslain mukainen tilintarkastusyhteisö, varatilintarkastajaa ei tarvitse valita.
   – toiminnantarkastaja: tutkija Jussi Lintunen, Elinkeinoelämän tutkimuslaitos
   – varatoiminnantarkastaja: tutkija Jussi Leppänen, Luonnonvarakeskus

Kokoukseen osallistuvat Seuran äänivaltaiset jäsenet voivat tehdä muita ehdotuksia avoimiin tehtäviin.

8. Seuran sääntömuutosesityksen (Liite 3) ensimmäinen käsittely. Seuran hallitus ehdottaa seuraavia muutoksia Seuran sääntöihin:
   – Mahdollisuus jäsenkokousten etäosallistumiseen kirjataan sääntöihin.
   – Seura ei enää kutsu kunniajäseniä.
   – Pieniä muotoseikkojen korjauksia.
   Seuran nykyiset säännöt löytyvät tästä linkistä.
9. Muut mahdollisesti esille tulevat asiat.
   Seuran jäsenet voivat ottaa esille päätösasioita ilmoittamalla siitä etukäteen sähköpostitse toiminnanjohtajalle (pekka.nygren {at} metsatiede.org) 26.11.2020 mennessä. Keskusteluasioita voi ottaa esille myös tämän jälkeen, viimeistään kokouksessa työjärjestyksen hyväksymisen yhteydessä.

Invitation to Autumn Meeting 10 December 2020

Autumn meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will be held on Thursday 10 December 2020 at 16:00 as a remote meeting.

Finnish law requires that all participants to an on-line members’ meeting of a society must register at latest a week before the meeting. Thus, register at latest on 3 December 2020 using this link.

A Zoom link to the meeting will be sent to all registered participants as a calendar invitation.

Programme

1. Opening of the meeting
2. Election of the meeting chair, secretary, reviewers of the minutes, and voice counters.
3. Confirmation of the legality and quorum of the meeting.
4. Acceptance of the programme.
5. Confirmation of the Plan of activities 2021 (Appendix 1, in Finnish), Budget 2021 (Appendix 2, in Finnish), and the membership fee for 2020.
6. Election of the chair and vice-chair of the Society for 2021 and board members for term 2021 – 2023. Current board members whose term is ending are Arto Kariniemi and Anna Repo. According to the 6th § of the statutes of the Society, both can be re-elected. The proposal of a work group searching for candidates is:
   – Chair 2021: Dr Tuija Aronen, Natural Resources Institute Finland
   – Vice Chair 2021: Dr Marjo Palviainen, University of Helsinki
   – Board member 2021 – 2023: Dr Arto Kariniemi and Dr Anna Repo, Natural Resources Institute Finland

Members of the Society who have the voting right may present other candidates in the meeting.

7. Election of the auditor of the accounts and the activities of the Society for 2021. The proposal:
   – Auditor of Accounts: audit society PricewaterhouseCoopers
   – Because the auditor is an audit society, vice auditor is not elected.
   – Auditor of Activities: Dr Jussi Lintunen, ETLA
   – Vice-Auditor of Activities: Mr Jussi Leppänen, Natural Resources Institute Finland

Members of the Society who have the voting right may present other candidates in the meeting.

8. First processing of the changes to the statutes of the Finnish Society of Forest Science (Appendix 3, in Finnish). The proposed changes:
   – Remote participation in members’ meeting will become permanent.
   – The Society will no longer invite honorary members.
   – Some linguistic and stylistic revisions.
   Current statutes of the Society are available in Finnish through this link.
9. Other possible items.
   If a member wants to propose a topic that requires a decision of a members’ meeting of the Society, should sent an e-mail to the Executive Manager of the Society (pekka.nygren {ät} metsatiede.org) detailing the topic at latest on 26 November 2020. Discussion topics may also be made after that, at latest on site at the time of the acceptance of the meeting programme.

IUFRO-apurahojen jako siirtyy suoraan Metsämiesten säätiölle vuonna 2021

Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura on jakanut Metsämiesten säätiön myöntämät apurahat IUFRO-toimintaan oman apurahahakunsa yhteydessä. Apurahakäytäntöjensä yhdenmukaistamisen yhteydessä Metsämiesten säätiö alkaa jakaa IUFRO-apurahat itse ja tämä yhteistyö Seuran kanssa loppuu. Vuodesta 2021 alkaen IUFRO-apurahahakemukset tulee tehdä suoraan Metsämiesten säätiön apurahahaun yhteydessä aina 31 tammikuuta mennessä. Seuraava Metsämiesten säätiön apurahahaku on auki 1.12.2020  31.1.2021. Lue tarkemmin suoraan Metsämiesten säätiön hakuohjeista.

Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura kiittää Metsämiesten säätiötä luottamuksesta IUFRO-apurahapäätösten tekemisessä ja säätiön tuesta suomalaiselle metsätieteelle. Odotamme että hyvä yhteistyömme jatkuu tulevaisuudessa monilla muilla tavoin.

Foundation Metsämiesten säätiö will award IUFRO grants directly from 2021 onwards

Finnish Society of Forest Science has awarded the grants for IUFRO activities of the foundation Metsämiesten säätiö on behalf of the foundation. Metsämiesten säätiö is streamlining its grant practices. Consequently, the foundation will award directly the IUFRO grants starting from the grants for 2021. The deadline of the application round of Metsämiesten säätiö is always 31 January. The next round for grant applications will be open from 1 December 2020 through 31 January 2021. Finnish Society of Forest Science thanks Metsämiesten säätiö for confidence on IUFRO grant awards and the support of the foundation for Finnish forest science. We expect that our good cooperation will continue in the future in many other forms.

Webinaari ”Avoin data metsäntutkimuksessa – hyödyt, ongelmat ja tulevaisuus” 10.12.2020
Webinar “Open data in forest sciences – benefits, problems and future” (in Finnish)

Yhä useammat eurooppalaiset tutkimusrahoittajat, mukaan lukien Suomen Akatemia, vaativat rahoituksellaan tehdyn tutkimuksen datan avaamista. Datan avoimuus on keskeisesti esillä myös voimistuvassa avoimen tieteen liikkeessä. Suomessa valmistellaan tutkimusaineistojen kansallista linjausta. Miksi datan pitäisi olla avoin? Mitä hyötyjä ja haittoja tutkimusaineistojen avaamisesta voi olla? Metsätieteissä datan avaaminen on jo arkipäivää metsien ja ilmakehän vuorovaikutuksia käsittelevässä tutkimuksessa ja monet kaukokartoittajat käyttävät hyväkseen avoimia aineistoja. Yhteiskuntatieteellisessä metsäntutkimuksessa ollaan epäileväisempiä ennen kaikkea henkilötietojen suojan takia.

Osallistu Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran järjestämään webinaariin metsädatan avaamisesta. Kuulet datan avaajien ja avoimen datan käyttäjien kokemuksista, opit datan avaamisen käytännöistä, kuulet millaisia aineistoja Suomen metsäkeskuksella on valmiina ja saat informaatiota metsätieteellisen seuran julkaisusarjojen uusista avoimuus- läpinäkyvyyslinjauksista. Yleiskeskustelussa saat kysyä mitä olet aina halunnut tietää avoimesta datasta, muttet ole vielä voinut kysyä.

Jäsenmaksukertymämme on laskenut huolestuttavasti viime ja tänä vuonna. Oletko saanut jäsenmaksulomakkeet? Vuoden 2019 alusta Seura siirtyi käyttämään jäsenrekisterinään pilvipalvelu Membookia ja aloimme lähetämään myös jäsenmaksulomakkeet sen kautta. Sähköpostin lähettäjänä näkyy ”Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura ry via Membook <no-reply@membook.fi>”. Voit maksaa jäsenmaksusi joko viestin tietojen mukaan omassa verkkopankissasi tai, jos rekisteröidyt Membookin käyttäjäksi, suoraan jäsenrekisteristämme Paytrailin tarjoaman maksupalvelun kautta.

Mikäli et ole saanut vuoden 2020 jäsenmaksuviestiä, ilmoita siitä Seuran toiminnanjohtajalle (pekka.nygren {miuku} metsatiede.org) niin saat uuden jäsenmaksulinkin.

Membership payment invoices are sent by e-mail

Membership payments of our Society have strongly decreased in 2019 and 2020. Have you received our membership payment form via e-mail? From the beginning of 2019, we are using the cloud service Membook as our member register. We also send our membership payment invoices via e-mail. The sender of the e-mail is “Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura ry via Membook <no-reply@membook.fi>”. You can pay the membership fee in your own net bank according to the instructions given in the e-mail or you can register as a user of Membook and pay directly in Membook using the interface provided by Paytrail Inc.

If you have not received the 2020 membership payment invoice, please, inform the Executive Manager of our Society (pekka.nygren [at] metsattiede.org). He will send sent you a new payment link.

TENK’s Research Integrity Afternoon, 2 December 2020

What to do if you suspect that your work has been plagiarised? How to tackle authorship issues? Who can help you with these problems, and what kind of research integrity framework do we have in place in Finland?
The Finnish National Board on Research Integrity TENK welcomes international researchers working in Finland to our research integrity afternoon in Zoom at 14-16 on Wednesday, 2 December 2020. The language of the event is English.

Finnish Society of Forest Science will organise the 28^th Forest Science Day on 20 October 2020. The event is the most important annual gathering of forest scientists and those who apply science for practical forest and environmental management. Current year is the International Year of Plant Health. In the same spirit, this year’s theme of the Forest Science Day will be “Forest Health Today and Tomorrow”.

Current year has also brougth to our attention human health issues and their dependence on our environment. The corona virus passed from bats through an intermediary host to humans has caused a pandemic. Because of the restrictions to gatherings and travel caused by the pandemic, also the Forest Science Day will be organised online-only on 20 October 2020 from 9:00 through 16:40.

Forest health under changing environmental conditions is a crucial ecological, management, and economic issue in the development of forestry to meet the future challenges. Large-scale damage to forests in Canada and Central Europe has raised attention also in Finland. Just a few years ago, warm and dry summer provoked mass outbreak of spruce bark beetles in Finland. Distribution ranges of many tree-living insect species are shifting northwards. Are the outbreaks and other disturbances just a part of natural forest dynamics? Are the insect outbreaks the new normal? What opportunities do the applications of biotechnology offer for better forest health? How can we improve forest health through forest management? These are some of the questions we have on forest health. The keynote speaker of the Forest Science Day will be Professor Allan Carroll from the University of British Columbia, Canada. His talk will be “Synergies, feedbacks and tipping points: causes and consequences of an unprecedented forest insect outbreak”. We shall hear also talks by leading Finnish experts and, in the afternoon, the parallel sessions organised by the science clubs of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will take a deeper look to forest health issues from various viewpoints of forest sciences.

Invitation to the Spring meeting on 7 May 2020

Spring meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science has been postponed to Thursday 7 May 2020 at 15:00. The venue will be room 309 in the House of Sciences and Letters (Tieteiden talo, Kirkkokatu 6, Helsinki).

Registration

Metsien terveys nyt ja tulevaisuudessa

Metsätieteen päivä järjestetään tänä vuonna yleisteemalla ”Metsien terveys nyt ja tulevaisuudessa” Kansainvälisen kasvinterveysvuoden osana. Aamupäivän yhteiskokous on tänä vuonna poikkeuksellisesti englanninkielinen. Tieteenalakerhojen järjestämien iltapäivän rinnakkaissessioiden kieli on pääsääntöisesti suomi, mutta myös ruotsin- ja englanninkieliset esitykset ovat tervetulleita. Forest Science Day 20 June 2020

Forest Health Today and Tomorrow

Current year’s Forest Science Day will be organised with the general theme “Forest Health Today and Tomorrow”, according to the International Plant Health Year. The language of the morning plenary session will be English. The parallel sessions of the science clubs of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will be mainly in Finnish but presentations in Swedish or English are welcome. The call for papers to the afternoon sessions will be sent soon.

Finnish Society of Forest Science awards annually prizes for excellent doctoral and Master’s theses accepted during the preceding year. The awards are made among the theses proposed by the Department of Forest Sciences at the University of Helsinki and the School of Forest Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland. The number of awards is not fixed but depends on the quality of the theses proposed in each year. Typically, the Society awards 1-2 prizes for excellent doctoral dissertations and 1-3 prices for excellent M.Sc. theses.

The prizes have been published in the Spring meeting of the Society, and 1-2 awardees have given a talk on their theses. Because of the special arrangements caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we publish this year’s prizes on our website.

Prize for an excellent doctoral dissertation:

Maija Lampela, University of Helsinki. Ecological prerequisites for successful reforestation of degraded tropical peatlands. https://doi.org/10.14214/df.263

Dr Maija Lampela studied the characteristics of the peat layer of Indonesian tropical peat swamp forests as a substrate for restoration planting of trees. Tropical peat swamp forest are large carbon reservoirs and biodiversity hotspot but they are threatened by large-scale land conversion to other uses. In her dissertation research, Dr Lampela questioned old perceptions on tropical peat swamp forests and came to interesting conclusions that have also practical implications for restoring these fragile ecosystems using native tree species.

The dissertation summary article of Dr Lampela’s work was published in Dissertationes Forestales, which is a dissertation monograph series published by the Finnish Society of Forest Science, the University of Helsinki, and the University of Eastern Finland. It is open access with CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence.

Prize for an excellent M.Sc. thesis:

Ilmeini Lasarov, University of Eastern Finland. Kirjanpainajan (Ips typographus) foreettisten punkkien kuljettama sinistäjäsieni- ja hiivalajisto Itä-Suomessa. [Blue stain fungi and yeast transported by the foretic ticks of spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) in Eastern Finland].

M.Sc. Lasarov’s thesis provides new information on the yeasts and blue stain fungi associated with spruce bark beetle. M.Sc. Lasarov conducted the work independently and used modern methods of molecular biology for identifying the microbes associated with spruce bark beetles.

Syyskokouksen 11.12.2019 päätöksiä / Decisions of the Autumn meeting 11 December 2019

Seuran hallitukseen tuli pieniä muutoksia syyskokouksessa 11.12.2019. Puheenjohtajaksi vuodelle 2020 valittiin prof. Miina Rautiainen Aalto-yliopistosta ja varapuheenjohtajaksi johtava tutkija Tuija Aronen Luonnonvarakeskuksesta, molemmat toiselle yksivuotiskaudelle. Uutena hallitukseen valittiin Antti Kilpeläinen Itä-Suomen yliopistosta. Hallituksessa jatkavat Arto Karinimiemi, Matleena Kniivilä (Luke), Anna Repo (Luke) ja Sakari Tuominen (Luke). Syyskokous hyväksyi myös vuoden 2020 toimintasuunnitelman ja talousarvion. Vuonna 2020 Seura korostaa toiminnassaan erityisesti avoimen tieteen teemoja. Seuran jäsenmaksu varsinaisilta jäseniltä on edelleen 50 € ja kannattajajäseniltä 800 €.

Professor Miina Rautiainen was elected as the Chair of the Society in the Autumn meeting on 11 December 2019. Principal Scientist Tuija Aronen from the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) was elected as the Vice-Chair. Antti Kilpeläinen (University of Eastern Finland) was elected as a new Board member. Arto Kariniemi, Matleena Kniivilä (Luke), Anna Repo (Luke), and Sakari Tuominen (Luke) continue as Board members. Plan of activities and budget for 2020 were accepted in the meeting. The special theme of the activities of the Society will be open science. The membership fee remains flat at 50 € for ordinary members and at 800 € for supporting members.

Uusi verkkosivusto / New website

Seuran uusi verkkosivusto on avattu osoitteessa https://metsatiede.org. Vanha osoite ohjaa myös oikealle sivulle, mutta suosittelemme kirjanmerkin päivittämistä. Uusi sivusto on toteutettu WordPressillä. Se skaalautuu erilaisille lukulaitteille. Ulkoasussa pyrimme selkeyteen ylirunsaan kuvituksen asemesta. Kuvitusta kuitenkin lisätään sitä mukaa kun sivustolle lisätään uusia aiheita. Käytämme myös edelleen valikoita niiden käytännöllisyyden takia. Uusi sivusto on lähes valmis, mutta muutama sivu on vielä työn alla. Kaikkea vanhan sivuston aineistoa ei siirretä uudelle sivustolle.

New website of our Society has been opened at https://metsatiede.org. The old URL also directs to the new website yet recommend you to update your bookmark. The new site is made with WordPress. It is scalable to various reading devices. We have emphasised clarity in the appearance. We will add more photos to the site when new items are added. We also use menus because of their practical features. The new website is almost ready but a few pages are still under development. We will not transfer all materials from the old site to the new website.

Apurahapäätökset 2020 / Grant decisions 2020

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran hallitus päätti kokouksessaan 11.3.2020 myöntää seitsemän tutkimusapurahaa, yhteensä 46 386 €, yhdeksän matka-apurahaa, yhteensä 7 825 €, yhden apurahan muuhun kansainväliseen toimintaan, 1 575 € sekä Metsämiesten säätiön Seuran hallinnoimiksi myöntämistä varoista kymmenen apurahaa IUFRO-toimintaan, yhteensä 14 230 €. IUFRO-apurahamyönnöissä on huomioitu, että IUFRO:n toimihenkilöt voivat hakea apurahaa myös varsinaisen hakuajan ulkopuolella. Apurahan saajia on informoitu henkilökohtaisesti.

The Board of the Finnish Society of Forest Science decided in the 11 March 2020 meeting to award seven research grants, total of 46 386 €, nine travel grants, total of 7 825 €, and one grant for other international activities, 1 575 €. The Board also awarded ten grants for IUFRO activities, total of 14 230 €, from the funds provided by the foundation Metsämiesten säätiö. The decision on IUFRO grants reserves funds for IUFRO office holders who may apply for a IUFRO grant also outside the regular grant application period. The grantees have been informed.

Koronaviruspandemian vaikutus toimintaamme / Effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on our activities

Koronavirusepidemia on jo vaikuttanut toimintaamme: Seuran kevätkokous on jouduttu siirtämään toukokuun alkuun ja Taksaattoriklubin vuosikokous ja seminaari on siirretty myöhemmin ilmoitettavaan ajankohtaan. Pandemian tilanne ei ole vielä selvä ja se voi aiheuttaa uusia muutoksia toimintaamme. Siksi kehotammekin kaikkia jäseniämme seuraamaan ajankohtaista tietoa Seuran ja klubien tapahtumista uuden verkkosivuston tapahtumakalenterista: https://metsatiede.org/toiminta/tapahtumat/. Pandemia on jo aiheuttanut muutoksia apurahan saajiemme matkasuunnitelmiin. Lähetimme jo myöntöilmoituksen mukana lyhyet ohjeet matkavarauksista. Seuran hallitus päättää loppukeväästä erityisjärjestelyistä, mikäli apurahan saajamme kokous on siirretty tai peruttu.

COVID-19 pandemic has already affected our activities: The Spring meeting of our Society is postponed to 7 May and the annual meeting of the Forest Mensuration Club has been postponed to a date that will be informed later. The full extend of the pandemic is not clear at the moment and we may need to make other modifications to our activities. Please, follow the Calendar of Activities in our new website for most updated information: https://metsatiede.org/en/activities/calendar-of-activities/. The pandemic has affected also the travel plans of our grantees. We sent brief instructions on reservations with the award message to all travel grantees. The Board of our Society will decide later this spring on special arrangements if the meeting, to which our grantee plans to participate, will be postponed or cancelled.

Six-years-old Forest Law of Finland: Has anything changed?

The justifications of the 2014 Forest Law were increasing the management alternatives for forest owners, reduction of bureaucracy, and promoting forest biodiversity. Six years is not a long time in a forest. However, we can already review how the aims of the Forest Law have been implemented and how we can see them in the Finnish forests. Are the management practices diversified? Are the forest owners willing and able to use the increased choice of management alternatives? Has the rate of impoverishment of the forest biodiversity stopped or at least slowed down? The Finnish forest science community discussed about the 2014 Forest Law in the Forest Science Day.
