The scientific recognitions of the Finnish Society of Forest Science are Silver Cajander Medal for excellent work in forest sciences, Bronze Cajander Medal for important work in forest sciences and the Medal of the Finnish Society of Forest Science for important work for the Society or for advancing the Society’s goals.
The Society awarded the recognitions to eight scientist and a scientific organisation in the celebration of the 115th anniversary of the Society, in connection to the Forest Sciences’ Day 23 October 2024.

Finnish Society of Forest Science awards annually prizes for excellent doctoral and Master’s theses accepted during the preceding year. The awards are made among the theses proposed by the Department of Forest Sciences at the University of Helsinki and the School of Forest Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland. The number of awards is not fixed but depends on the quality of the theses proposed in each year. Typically, the Society awards 1-2 prizes for excellent doctoral dissertations and 1-3 prizes for excellent M.Sc. theses.
The prizes of 2024 were published in the Spring meeting of the Society on 4 April 2024. Dissertation prize awardee gave a talk on her thesis.
Prize for an excellent doctoral dissertation
Dr Yu Tang, University of Helsinki. Unravelling δ13C signal in Scots pine trees for climate change and tree physiology studies. https://doi.org/10.14214/df.335
Dr Yu Tang successfully defended her dissertation “Unravelling δ13C signal in Scots pine trees for climate change and tree physiology studies” at the University of Helsinki. Yu Tang studied the application of the stable carbon isotope 12C/13C relationship, or the d13C signal, when investigating the carbon assimilation by the trees to photosynthetic products and further to biomass. The work is timely because it provides insights for understanding the interaction between the climate change and tree growth. The study deepens our understanding on the effects of environmental change on the d13C signal of tree leaves and how the signal is modified in wood formation from photosynthetic products. The new knowledge helps to interpret the differences in the d13C signal in different parts of a tree and to understand how trees adapt to climate change. Yu Tang uses several new tools for determining the environmentally sensitive d13C signal from tree leaves and annual rings. The work is outstanding in its field of study and it was approved with distinction. The experimental part of the study is ambitious and wide. Exceptionally many different approaches are used for solving the study problem. Yu Tang is the first author in three of the four original articles that form the dissertation. The dissertation is well written and the results are expected to be proven scientifically valuable.
The dissertation was published in the number 335 of Dissertationes Forestales, which is published by the Finnish Society of Forest Science in cooperation with the University of Helsinki and the University of Eastern Finland.
Prizes for excellent M.Sc. theses
M.Sc. Anastasija Dmitrijeva, University of Helsinki. Barriers, drivers and opportunities to circular economy in wood construction in Finland. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:hulib-202306273339
M.Sc. Anastasija Dmitrijeva’s thesis “Barriers, drivers and opportunities to circular economy in wood construction in Finland” was presented at the University of Helsinki. Anastasija Dmitrijeva’s discipline is business economics and politics of forest bioeconomy. She studied the potential and challenges of circular economy in wood construction. The thesis is based on interviews of professionals of the construction industry and closely related trades. The work is timely because the use of wood materials will reduce carbon emissions from the construction industry. The work of Anastasija Dmitrijeva is both scientifically and societally interesting because of the topic and its timeliness. She uses existing literature for clearly defining the background of the topic. All methods are well described. Based on the thematic interviews, Anastasija Dmitrijeva proposes that the challenges of circular construction economy could be solved with a holistic approach and unification of the practices. She emphasises the importance of the intermediary actors role in reaching the change, like of those who manage materials. The presentation of the thesis shows maturity. Its finalisation and linguistic quality are excellent.
M.Sc. Hanna Haapala, University of Eastern Finland. Metsäpinta-alan määrittäminen ICESat-2-satelliittilaserin avulla [Determining Forest Area with ICESat-2 Satellite LiDAR].
M.Sc. Hanna Haapala’s thesis “Determining Forest Area with ICESat-2 Satellite LiDAR” was presented at the University of Eastern Finland. Hanna Haapala’s discipline is forest mensuration and management planning. She studied the material produced by the ICESat-2 satellite. ICESat-2 is developed by NASA for mapping ice cover and vegetation. It is based on laser measurements made from space, which differ from the traditional passive satellite sensors used for mapping vegetation by being an active remote sensing method. The work of Hanna Haapala is very timely in its field of study because active sensors are becoming more widely used in global forest mapping and surveys. The satellite laser data used in the thesis makes possible to predict the development of forest cover and other features more directly than what is possible using optical sensors. The work of Hanna Haapala is more extensive than a typical Master’s thesis. The thesis shows that the author is familiar with the forest predictions based on remote sensing and the methods for validating them. The methods developed in her work may be applied for uniformly producing mapform forest predictions for extensive areas. Hanna Haapala has widely studied and applied the existing literature on the topic.

Finnish Society of Forest Science participated in the Night of Science by organising a workshop on “New tools for multipurpose forest management planning”. Participants of the workshop had the opportunity to use two simulators. Experts of the workshop were Professor Annamari Laurén (peatland forestry) and Assistant Professor Marjo Palviainen (silviculture) from the University of Helsinki and Research Professor Lauri Mehtätalo from the Natural Resources Institute Finland.

The participants used the peatland forest simulator SUSI for studying how temperature and rainfall changes affect forest growth and carbon balance in drained peatlands as well as on the nutrient load from drained peatlands to inland waters. In the second case, they studied how impacts of the climate change may be mitigated by adjusting ditch depth or by ash fertilisation. With another simulator, the participants estimated long-term logging possibilities and effect of various harvesting strategies on forest growth and carbon sinks at regional and site type level.
The Night of Science is a block party for science and research. It is celebrated annually in Helsinki. The next event takes place on Thursday the 9 January 2025, as a part of the Science Forum 2025. The programme is made by many different organisations and actors and the multiple events offer science and research in many different forms. All events are free of charge!

Application of grants of the Finnish Society of Forest Science is open from 22 January through 16 February 2024
Finnish Society of Forest Science promotes forest research in Finland. As a means to reach this goal, the Society awards grants for research, travel that supports research or post-graduate studies, other international activities, language studies, and other purposes that advance forest sciences.
The application for the grants will open on 22 January and close on 16 February 2024 at 16:00. The applications will be submitted using the new electronic grant application system. Syyskokouksen 30.11.2023 päätöksiä
Seuran syyskokous pidettiin 30.11.2023 Tieteiden talossa. Myös etäosallistuminen oli mahdollista. Kokouksessa hyväksyttiin Seuran toimintasuunnitelma ja talousarvio 2024. Jäsenmaksut pysyvät ennallaan: 50 € vuosi varsinaisilta henkilöjäseniltä ja 800 € vuosi kannattajajäseniltä. Hallituksen puheenjohtajaksi valittiin uudelleen apulaisprofessori Marjo Palviainen (Helsingin yliopisto) ja varapuheenjohtajaksi uudelleen tutkimusprofessori Liisa Tyrväinen (Luonnonvarakeskus). Erovuoroinen hallituksen jäsen erikoistutkija Heikki Ovaskainen (Metsäteho oy) valittiin uudestaan kaudelle 2024 – 2026 ja uudeksi hallituksen jäseneksi valittiin yliopistotutkija Virpi Virjamo (Itä-Suomen yliopisto) samalle toimikaudelle.

Decisions of the Autumn Meeting on 30 November 2023
The Autumn Meeting of our Society was organised on 30 November 2023 in the House of Sciences and Letters (Tieteiden talo). Remote participation was also possible. The meeting accepted the Plan of Activities and the budget 2024. The membership fee for ordinary members will remain at 50 € and supporting members’ fee will be 800 €. Assistant Professor Marjo Palviainen (University of Helsinki) was re-elected as the Chair of the Board and Research Professor Liisa Tyrväinen (Natural Resources Institute Finland) was re-elected as the Vice-Chair of the Board. Dr Heikki Ovaskainen (Metsäteho Ltd.) was re-elected as a Board Member for 2024 – 2026 and Dr Virpi Virjamo (University of Eastern Finland) was elected as a new Board Member for the same period.

Datan ja analyyttisten menetelmien uudet avoimuusvaatimukset Seuran tiedelehdissä
Tutkimusdata ja laskentakoodit, joita käytetään sen analysoimiseen, ovat tärkeitä tutkimuksen tuotoksia. Vain avoin data tekee tutkimuksen todella toistettavaksi. Tiettyä tutkimusongelmaa varten kerätty data saattaa myöhemmin saada uutta arvoa esim. aikasarjan osana tai muutoksen vertailukohtana. Uudet analyyttiset menetelmät saattavat auttaa löytämään datasta ilmiöitä, jotka jäivät alun perin peittoon. Tietyn tutkimusalan data kerääntyminen tekee jopa globaalit meta-analyysit mahdollisiksi. Avoin data avaa myös uusia yhteistyömahdollisuuksia tutkijoille, tutkimusryhmille ja organisaatioille. Tämän takia datan avaaminen ja sen huolellinen kuvaaminen eli metadata edistävät tiedettä. Alkaen 1.2.2024 Seuran tiedelehdet Silva Fennica ja Metsätieteen aikakauskirja vaativat, että sarjaan vertaisarvioitavaksi lähetettävien käsikirjoitusten taustalla olevan tutkimusdatan ja analyysikoodien on oltava avoimia.
Data on avattava FAIR-periaatteen mukaan eli sen on oltava löydettävää (findable, F), saavutettavaa (accessible, A), yhteensopivaa (interoperable, I) ja toistettavaa (reproducible, R).
Lehtiin lähetettävien vertaisarvioitavien käsikirjoitusten tutkimusdatan sekä tutkimusdatan metatietojen ja sen analysoimiseen käytettyjen koodien on oltava avoimia ja talletettuna luotettavaan data-arkistoon. Myös kaikkien käsikirjoituksen kuvien takana olevan datan on oltava avointa. Raakadatan avaamista emme vaadi, mutta raakadatan metatietojen on oltava avoimia ja talletettuna luotettavaan arkistoon. Myös koodi(e)n, jonka avulla raakadata on käsitelty artikkelin pohjana olevan tutkimusdatan muotoon, on oltava avoin. Kirjoittajien, joilla on mielestään perusteltu syy jättää data avaamatta, on sovittava poikkeuksesta etukäteen lehden päätoimittajan tai toimitussihteerin kanssa poikkeuksesta. Metatiedon on oltava avoin, vaikka data jota se kuvailee, olisikin avaamatta.
New data and code openness guidelines in the journals of our Society
Research data and computer codes used for analysing them are important products of scientific research. Open data make the full evaluation of research results possible. Only open data make a study really reproducible. Value of the data collected for solving a particular research problem may gain new value over time e.g., as a part of a time series, as a comparison point for analysing changes or as a part of the cultural heritage. New analytical methods may reveal phenomena that the original data analysis missed. Accumulation of data on a particular field like genomics makes global reanalyses possible. Open data offer also new cooperation possibilities for scientists, research groups and organisations. All this calls for data openness and reliable description, or metadata, of it. Based on these considerations, journals of our Society, Silva Fennica and Metsätieteen aikakauskirja, request that data and analytical codes, on which manuscripts submitted to these journals are based, must be opened. This request concerns manuscripts that will be submitted to peer-review on or after 1 February 2024.
Data will be requested to be opened following the FAIR principles, which guide the data to be opened so that they are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.
Metadata of your research data set must be unconditionally open even when the data set itself is not. Computer code(s) used for analyses documented in the manuscript must also be open. The journals do not request opening of your raw data, yet we encourage opening them. However, metadata of the raw data must be open, as well as the access to code that you used for processing your research data from the raw data. If you feel that you have justified reasons for not opening your research data, you must agree on the exception before submission with the Editor-in-Chief or the Managing Editor.
Seuran työpaja ”Uudet työkalut Monitavoitteisessa metsänhoidossa” Tieteiden yössä 25.1.2024
Tieteiden yö on tieteen oma kaupunkitapahtuma Helsingissä. Vuosittain tammikuussa järjestettävää tapahtumaa vietetään seuraavan kerran torstaina 25.1.2024. Seura osallistuu tapahtumaan järjestämällä työpajan monitavoitteisen metsänhoidon työkaluista Tieteiden talon salissa 208 klo 17.00 – 18.30.
Metsien hoitoon ja käyttöön liittyy useita tavoitteita: metsien pitäisi tuottaa samanaikaisesti riittävästi puuta metsäteollisuuden tarpeisiin sekä tuloja metsänomistajille, mutta myös toimia hiilinieluna ja hillitä ilmastonmuutosta. Lisäksi metsien hoidossa pitäisi huomioida ympäristönäkökohdat, esimerkiksi minimoida vesistökuormitus. Miten metsien hoidon ja käytön ristiriitaisia tavoitteita voidaan sovittaa yhteen?
Työpajassa pääset itse kokeilemaan asiantuntijoiden opastuksella uusia työkaluja, joita voidaan käyttää päätöksenteon tukena ja keskustella monitavoitteisesta metsänhoidosta. Työpaja tarjoaa mahdollisuuden oivaltaa, miten metsien hoitoa ja käyttöä voi suunnitella eri tavoitteet huomioiden ja millaisia kompromisseja se saattaa edellyttää.
The Night of Science is a block party for science and research. It is celebrated annually in Helsinki. The next event takes place on Thursday the 25 January 2024. Our Society participates in the event by organising a workshop on new tools for multipurpose forest management in the House of Sciences and Letters (Tieteiden talo), Room 208, from 17:00 through 18:30. The main language will be Finnish but English may be used as needed.

Metsäbiologian kerhon vuosikokous ja sen yhteydessä järjestettävä vuosikokousseminaari pidetään tiistaina 23.1.2024 Tieteiden talolla (Kirkkokatu 6, Helsinki). Vuosikokousseminaarin aiheena on suometsien monimuotoisuus. Tilaisuus alkaa klo 16.30 seminaariesitelmillä, joita seuraa vuosikokous klo 19.00 alkaen.

Metsänhoitoklubin vuosikokous ja seminaari 13.2.2024
Metsänhoitoklubin vuosikokous ja -seminaari järjestetään 13.2. klo 12-16 Tieteiden talon salissa 505 Helsingissä. Seminaarin aihe on Miten metsänjalostuksella edistetään ilmastonmuutokseen sopeutumista.
Vuosikokoukseen ja seminaariin voi osallistua paikalla tai etänä. Ilmoittautuminen avautuu ensi viikolla ja linkki tulee Metsänhoitoklubin sivulle. Vuosikokous pidetään klo 12.00 – 13.00 ja siinä käsitellään sääntömääräiset vuosikokousasiat. Seminaarissa tarkastella lyhyiden esitysten ja keskustelun kautta miten metsänjalostuksella voidaan edistää metsien ilmastonmuutokseen sopeutumista.

Annual meeting and seminar of the Silviculture Club will be organised on Tuesday 13 February 2024 in the House of Sciences and Letters (Tieteiden talo). The event will be in Finnish. Tämän vuoden Metsätieteiden päivä järjestetään Helsingin yliopiston Viikin kampuksella keskiviikkona 23.10.2024. Merkitse koko päivä kalenteriisi. Tuttuun tapaan aamupäivällä on kaikille yhteinen kokous ja iltapäivällä Seuran tieteenalakerhot järjestävät kuusi rinnakkaiskokousta. Iltapäivän lopuksi kokoonnumme yhteen Seuran 115-vuotispäivien merkeissä ja nautimme buffetin antimista.
The Forest Sciences’ Day will be organised on Wednesday 23 October 2024 in the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki. Mark whole day in your calendar! In the morning, we will have a plenary session and in the afternoon, the science clubs of our Society will organise six parallel sessions. By the end of the afternoon, we all will gather to celebrate the 115th anniversary of our Society. The day ends with the traditional buffet.

Professor Teppo Hujala from the University of Eastern Finland steps down from his responsibilities as the Editor-in-Chief of Metsätieteen aikakauskirja, the scientific journal of Finnish Society of Forest Science that is published in national languages of Finland. He served one five-year term. The new EiC is Senior Lecturer Risto Kasanen from the University of Helsinki. Finnish Society of Forest Science thanks Teppo for his excellent service for multilingual science publishing and welcomes Risto to continue the work for Everyone’s Right to Forest Science.
Managing Editor Pekka Nygren and Editor Karipekka Byman continue with their tasks.
Autumn meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will be held on Thursday 30 November 2023 at 15:00 in Room 505 of the House of Sciences and Letters (Tieteiden talo, Kirkkokatu 6, Helsinki). The meeting is open for all ordinary and honorary members of the Society, and to the representatives of supporting members who must present an authorisation from the supporting member. Registration for remote participation is closed. The registered delegates will receive the Zoom link soon.

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seura ry:n sääntömääräinen syyskokous pidetään torstaina 30.11.2023 klo 15.00 alkaen Tieteiden talon (Kirkkokatu 6, Helsinki) salissa 505. Kokous on tarkoitettu Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran varsinaisille jäsenille, kunniajäsenille ja kannattajajäsenten edustajille, joiden on esitettävä valtakirja. Kokoukseen voi osallistua myös etänä ilmoittautumalla viimeistään 28.11.2023 tällä linkillä:
2. Kokouksen puheenjohtajan, sihteerin, pöytäkirjan tarkastajien ja ääntenlaskijoiden valinta.
3. Kokouksen laillisuuden ja päätösvaltaisuuden toteaminen.
4. Kokouksen työjärjestyksen hyväksyminen.
5. Vahvistetaan Seuran toimintasuunnitelma, tulo- ja menoarvio sekä jäsenmaksujen suuruus vuodelle 2024.

Ennakkotieto: Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran apurahat ovat haettavissa 22.1. – 16.2.2024
Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura toimii Suomen metsätieteellisen tutkimustyön hyväksi. Tarkoituksen toteuttamiseksi Seura myöntää hallinnassaan olevien rahastojen tuotoista apurahoja metsätiedettä edistäviin tarkoituksiin: tutkimusapurahoja, matka-apurahoja, apurahoja muuhun kansainväliseen toimintaan, kieliopintoihin ja muihin metsätiedettä edistäviin toimintoihin.
Apurahojen haku alkaa 22.1.2024 ja päättyy 16.2.2024 klo 16.00. Hae apurahaa sähköisellä apurahahakujärjestelmällä (https://metsatieteellinenseura.apurahat.net). Linkki järjestelmään aktivoituu hakuajan alkaessa.

Finnish Society of Forest Science will receive grant application from 22 Jan through 16 Feb 2024
Finnish Society of Forest Science promotes forest research in Finland. As a means to reach this goal, the Society awards grants for research, travel that supports research or post-graduate studies, other international activities, language studies, and other purposes that advance forest sciences.
The application for the grants will open on 22 January and close on 16 February 2024 at 16:00. The applications will be submitted using the electronic grant application system (https://metsatieteellinenseura.apurahat.net/login.aspx?lcid=1033). Link to system will be activated at the opening of the application period.
We kindly request you to read carefully the grant instructions on the web site of the Finnish Society of Forest Science. Please, note that the research plan for a research grant application must be written in the application form following the format given in the instructions.
Ukrainian forest scientist affiliated to a Finnish research organisation or pursuing doctoral studies in a Finnish university are encouraged to apply.
Updated application instructions will be uploaded in early January to page Grants.

Metsätieteiden päivän 2023 ”Ilmastonmuutos metsässä” nauhoitteet ovat Seuran verkkosivulla
Tämän vuoden Metsätieteiden päivä järjestettiin 25.10.2023 yleisteemalla ”Ilmastonmuutos metsässä”. Käsittelimme aihetta ilmasto- ja kasvillisuusmallien tuloksia ja hiilinielukeskustelua laajemmin. Kiinnitimme huomiota ilmastonmuutoksen ja luonnon monimuotoisuuden vuorovaikutuksiin, tulevaisuuden ennustamisen epävarmuustekijöihin, ihmisten ja metsien suhteisiin sekä ilmastonmuutoksen, luontokadon hillinnän ja puuntuotannon synergistisiin ratkaisuihin.
Metsätieteiden päivän aamupäivällä oli perinteisesti kaikille yhteinen kokous, jossa metsällisen ilmastonmuutostutkimuksen parhaat asiantuntijat tarkastelivat luonnon monimuotoisuutta ja metsänhoitoa muuttuvassa ilmastossa, ilmastonmuutoksen vaikutusta metsä- ja ympäristöpolitiikkaan sekä metsäbiotalouden tarjoamien ilmastoratkaisujen rajoja. Aamupäivän yhteiskokouksen puhujat olivat Liisa Kulmala (Ilmatieteen laitos), Saija Huuskonen (LUKE), Jussi Uusivuori (LUKE), Jyri Seppälä (SYKE) ja Antti Asikainen (LUKE).
Iltapäivällä Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran tieteenalakerhot järjestivät kuusi rinnakkaiskokousta, joissa ilmastonmuutosta käsiteltiin metsätieteiden eri osa-alojen näkökulmasta:

Recordings of the talks of the Forest Sciences’ Day “Climate change in forest” are on Society’s web site
The traditional Forest Sciences’ Day was organised on 25 October 2023. Our general topic was “Climate change in forests”. We went beyond the climate and vegetation model results and the discussion on forest carbon sinks. We payed attention to the interactions between climate change and biological diversity, to the uncertainties in predicting the future, to the human-forest relationships as well as to the synergistic solutions for mitigating climate change and biodiversity loss while producing timber.
In the morning, we had a plenary session, in which the best Finnish scientists of climate change spoke about the biological diversity and silviculture under the changing climate, effects of climate change on forest and environmental policy and the limits of forest bioeconomy in mitigating climate change. The speakers of the morning plenary session were Liisa Kulmala (Finnish Meteorological Institute), Saija Huuskonen (Natural Resources Institute Finland, LUKE), Jussi Uusivuori (LUKE), Jyri Seppälä (Finnish Environment Institute) and Antti Asikainen (LUKE)
The science clubs of the Finnish Society of Forest Science organised six parallel sessions in the afternoon. In these sessions, climate change was discussed from the viewpoints of several subdisciplines of forest sciences:
Synergistic solutions for enhancing carbon sequestration and safeguarding biodiversity in Finnish forests (Forest Biology Club)
All plenary talks and most parallel session talks were recorded. The recordings are now available on the web page of the Forest Sciences’ Day.

Tiedeklubi ”Metsäkato Suomessa” 15.11.2023
Tieteellisten seurain valtuuskunnan (TSV) luotsaamat Tiedeklubit jatkuvat syksyllä 2023 Tiedekahvilassa (Kirkkokatu 6, 00170 Helsinki). Tiedeklubit kutsuvat tieteenystävät after workeille. Tapahtumiin on vapaa pääsy. Tieklubeissa kuullaan monipuolisia keskusteluja eri tieteenaloilta kerran kuussa keskiviikkoisin klo 17.00–18.00. Keskustelut äänitetään myös podcasteiksi, jotka julkaistaan klubien jälkeisinä päivinä Tiederadio-kanavalla SoundCloudissa ja Spotifyssa.
Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura järjestää marraskuun Tiedeklubin 15.11.2023 teemalla ”Metsäkato Suomessa”.
Metsäkatoa Suomessa on pidetty historian ilmiönä. Kuitenkin Suomen metsäala pienenee edelleen, vuosien mittaan merkittävässä määrin. Mikä aiheuttaa nykyisen metsäkadon Suomessa? Uhkaako metsäkato hiilinielujamme? Mitkä ovat vaikutukset luonnon monimuotoisuudelle? Millaisia sosiaalisia konflikteja metsäkato ja sen torjuminen aiheuttavat?
Metsäkadon syistä, seurauksista ja torjunnasta keskustelevat professori Lasse Peltonen Itä-Suomen yliopistosta ja tutkimusprofessori Artti Juutinen Luonnonvarakeskuksesta. Keskustelua juontaa yliopistotutkija Anna Lintunen Helsingin yliopistosta.

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran huomionosoitukset
Metsätieteiden päivän iltapäivän päätteeksi jaettiin Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran huomionosoitukset. Pronssisen Cajander -ansiomitalin ansiokkaasta toiminnasta metsätieteiden hyväksi saivat tutkimusprofessori Hannu Fritze Luonnonvarakeskuksesta, professori Miina Rautiainen Aalto-yliopistosta ja professori Pasi Puttonen Helsingin yliopistosta. Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran mitalin ansiokkaasta työstä Seuran tarkoitusperien ja toiminnan hyväksi sai MMT Timo Saksa.

The scientific recognitions of the Finnish Society of Forest Science were awarded in the afternoon plenary session of the Forest Sciences’ Day. The Bronze Cajander medal for excellent work in forest sciences was awarded to Research Professor Hannu Fritze, Natural Resources Institute Finland, professor Miina Rautiainen, Aalto University and professor Pasi Puttonen, University of Helsinki. The Medal of Finnish Society of Forest Science for excellent work for promoting the aims of the Society was awarded to Dr Timo Saksa.
