Kutsu Seuran kevätkokoukseen 4.6.2020

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran sääntömääräinen kevätkokous pidetään etäkokouksena torstaina 4.6.2020 klo 15 alkaen.

Etukäteisilmoittautuminen

Poikkeuslaki, joka sallii yhdistysten jäsenkokousten pitämisen etäkokouksena COVID-19 pandemian takia vaatii, että kokouksiin ilmoittaudutaan viimeistään viikkoa ennen kokousta. Ilmoittaudu siis viimeistään 28.5.2020 käyttäen tätä linkkiä: https://link.webropolsurveys.com/S/325FEAA681A27DC1

Invitation to the Spring meeting on 7 May 2020

Spring meeting of the Finnish Society of Forest Science has been postponed to Thursday 7 May 2020 at 15:00. The venue will be room 309 in the House of Sciences and Letters (Tieteiden talo, Kirkkokatu 6, Helsinki).

Registration

Finnish law requires that all participants to an on-line members’ meeting of a society must register at latest a week before the meeting. Thus, register at latest on 28 May 2020 using this link: https://link.webropolsurveys.com/S/325FEAA681A27DC1

Metsätieteen päivä 20.10.2020

Metsien terveys nyt ja tulevaisuudessa

Metsätieteen päivä järjestetään tänä vuonna yleisteemalla ”Metsien terveys nyt ja tulevaisuudessa” Kansainvälisen kasvinterveysvuoden osana. Aamupäivän yhteiskokous on tänä vuonna poikkeuksellisesti englanninkielinen. Tieteenalakerhojen järjestämien iltapäivän rinnakkaissessioiden kieli on pääsääntöisesti suomi, mutta myös ruotsin- ja englanninkieliset esitykset ovat tervetulleita. Forest Science Day 20 June 2020

Forest Health Today and Tomorrow

Current year’s Forest Science Day will be organised with the general theme “Forest Health Today and Tomorrow”, according to the International Plant Health Year. The language of the morning plenary session will be English. The parallel sessions of the science clubs of the Finnish Society of Forest Science will be mainly in Finnish but presentations in Swedish or English are welcome. The call for papers to the afternoon sessions will be sent soon.

Finnish Society of Forest Science awards annually prizes for excellent doctoral and Master’s theses accepted during the preceding year. The awards are made among the theses proposed by the Department of Forest Sciences at the University of Helsinki and the School of Forest Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland. The number of awards is not fixed but depends on the quality of the theses proposed in each year. Typically, the Society awards 1-2 prizes for excellent doctoral dissertations and 1-3 prices for excellent M.Sc. theses.

The prizes have been published in the Spring meeting of the Society, and 1-2 awardees have given a talk on their theses. Because of the special arrangements caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we publish this year’s prizes on our website.

Prize for an excellent doctoral dissertation:

Maija Lampela, University of Helsinki. Ecological prerequisites for successful reforestation of degraded tropical peatlands. https://doi.org/10.14214/df.263

Dr Maija Lampela studied the characteristics of the peat layer of Indonesian tropical peat swamp forests as a substrate for restoration planting of trees. Tropical peat swamp forest are large carbon reservoirs and biodiversity hotspot but they are threatened by large-scale land conversion to other uses. In her dissertation research, Dr Lampela questioned old perceptions on tropical peat swamp forests and came to interesting conclusions that have also practical implications for restoring these fragile ecosystems using native tree species.

The dissertation summary article of Dr Lampela’s work was published in Dissertationes Forestales, which is a dissertation monograph series published by the Finnish Society of Forest Science, the University of Helsinki, and the University of Eastern Finland. It is open access with CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence.

Prize for an excellent M.Sc. thesis:

Ilmeini Lasarov, University of Eastern Finland. Kirjanpainajan (Ips typographus) foreettisten punkkien kuljettama sinistäjäsieni- ja hiivalajisto Itä-Suomessa. [Blue stain fungi and yeast transported by the foretic ticks of spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) in Eastern Finland].

M.Sc. Lasarov’s thesis provides new information on the yeasts and blue stain fungi associated with spruce bark beetle. M.Sc. Lasarov conducted the work independently and used modern methods of molecular biology for identifying the microbes associated with spruce bark beetles.

Syyskokouksen 11.12.2019 päätöksiä / Decisions of the Autumn meeting 11 December 2019

Seuran hallitukseen tuli pieniä muutoksia syyskokouksessa 11.12.2019. Puheenjohtajaksi vuodelle 2020 valittiin prof. Miina Rautiainen Aalto-yliopistosta ja varapuheenjohtajaksi johtava tutkija Tuija Aronen Luonnonvarakeskuksesta, molemmat toiselle yksivuotiskaudelle. Uutena hallitukseen valittiin Antti Kilpeläinen Itä-Suomen yliopistosta. Hallituksessa jatkavat Arto Karinimiemi, Matleena Kniivilä (Luke), Anna Repo (Luke) ja Sakari Tuominen (Luke). Syyskokous hyväksyi myös vuoden 2020 toimintasuunnitelman ja talousarvion. Vuonna 2020 Seura korostaa toiminnassaan erityisesti avoimen tieteen teemoja. Seuran jäsenmaksu varsinaisilta jäseniltä on edelleen 50 € ja kannattajajäseniltä 800 €.

Professor Miina Rautiainen was elected as the Chair of the Society in the Autumn meeting on 11 December 2019. Principal Scientist Tuija Aronen from the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) was elected as the Vice-Chair. Antti Kilpeläinen (University of Eastern Finland) was elected as a new Board member. Arto Kariniemi, Matleena Kniivilä (Luke), Anna Repo (Luke), and Sakari Tuominen (Luke) continue as Board members. Plan of activities and budget for 2020 were accepted in the meeting. The special theme of the activities of the Society will be open science. The membership fee remains flat at 50 € for ordinary members and at 800 € for supporting members.

Uusi verkkosivusto / New website

Seuran uusi verkkosivusto on avattu osoitteessa https://metsatiede.org. Vanha osoite ohjaa myös oikealle sivulle, mutta suosittelemme kirjanmerkin päivittämistä. Uusi sivusto on toteutettu WordPressillä. Se skaalautuu erilaisille lukulaitteille. Ulkoasussa pyrimme selkeyteen ylirunsaan kuvituksen asemesta. Kuvitusta kuitenkin lisätään sitä mukaa kun sivustolle lisätään uusia aiheita. Käytämme myös edelleen valikoita niiden käytännöllisyyden takia. Uusi sivusto on lähes valmis, mutta muutama sivu on vielä työn alla. Kaikkea vanhan sivuston aineistoa ei siirretä uudelle sivustolle.

New website of our Society has been opened at https://metsatiede.org. The old URL also directs to the new website yet recommend you to update your bookmark. The new site is made with WordPress. It is scalable to various reading devices. We have emphasised clarity in the appearance. We will add more photos to the site when new items are added. We also use menus because of their practical features. The new website is almost ready but a few pages are still under development. We will not transfer all materials from the old site to the new website.

Apurahapäätökset 2020 / Grant decisions 2020

Suomen Metsätieteellisen Seuran hallitus päätti kokouksessaan 11.3.2020 myöntää seitsemän tutkimusapurahaa, yhteensä 46 386 €, yhdeksän matka-apurahaa, yhteensä 7 825 €, yhden apurahan muuhun kansainväliseen toimintaan, 1 575 € sekä Metsämiesten säätiön Seuran hallinnoimiksi myöntämistä varoista kymmenen apurahaa IUFRO-toimintaan, yhteensä 14 230 €. IUFRO-apurahamyönnöissä on huomioitu, että IUFRO:n toimihenkilöt voivat hakea apurahaa myös varsinaisen hakuajan ulkopuolella. Apurahan saajia on informoitu henkilökohtaisesti.

The Board of the Finnish Society of Forest Science decided in the 11 March 2020 meeting to award seven research grants, total of 46 386 €, nine travel grants, total of 7 825 €, and one grant for other international activities, 1 575 €. The Board also awarded ten grants for IUFRO activities, total of 14 230 €, from the funds provided by the foundation Metsämiesten säätiö. The decision on IUFRO grants reserves funds for IUFRO office holders who may apply for a IUFRO grant also outside the regular grant application period. The grantees have been informed.

Koronaviruspandemian vaikutus toimintaamme / Effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on our activities

Koronavirusepidemia on jo vaikuttanut toimintaamme: Seuran kevätkokous on jouduttu siirtämään toukokuun alkuun ja Taksaattoriklubin vuosikokous ja seminaari on siirretty myöhemmin ilmoitettavaan ajankohtaan. Pandemian tilanne ei ole vielä selvä ja se voi aiheuttaa uusia muutoksia toimintaamme. Siksi kehotammekin kaikkia jäseniämme seuraamaan ajankohtaista tietoa Seuran ja klubien tapahtumista uuden verkkosivuston tapahtumakalenterista: https://metsatiede.org/toiminta/tapahtumat/. Pandemia on jo aiheuttanut muutoksia apurahan saajiemme matkasuunnitelmiin. Lähetimme jo myöntöilmoituksen mukana lyhyet ohjeet matkavarauksista. Seuran hallitus päättää loppukeväästä erityisjärjestelyistä, mikäli apurahan saajamme kokous on siirretty tai peruttu.

COVID-19 pandemic has already affected our activities: The Spring meeting of our Society is postponed to 7 May and the annual meeting of the Forest Mensuration Club has been postponed to a date that will be informed later. The full extend of the pandemic is not clear at the moment and we may need to make other modifications to our activities. Please, follow the Calendar of Activities in our new website for most updated information: https://metsatiede.org/en/activities/calendar-of-activities/. The pandemic has affected also the travel plans of our grantees. We sent brief instructions on reservations with the award message to all travel grantees. The Board of our Society will decide later this spring on special arrangements if the meeting, to which our grantee plans to participate, will be postponed or cancelled.

Six-years-old Forest Law of Finland: Has anything changed?

The justifications of the 2014 Forest Law were increasing the management alternatives for forest owners, reduction of bureaucracy, and promoting forest biodiversity. Six years is not a long time in a forest. However, we can already review how the aims of the Forest Law have been implemented and how we can see them in the Finnish forests. Are the management practices diversified? Are the forest owners willing and able to use the increased choice of management alternatives? Has the rate of impoverishment of the forest biodiversity stopped or at least slowed down? The Finnish forest science community discussed about the 2014 Forest Law in the Forest Science Day.
