Research-Based Knowledge on Human-Forest Relationships

Parallel session organised by the Human-Forest Relations Club in the Forest Science Day on 26 October 2021

Forest Science Day will be organised as a webinar. The afternoon parallel sessions will be broadcasted between 13:15 – 16:00.

The concept Human-Forest Relationship (HFR) refers to emotions, experiences, memories, skills, practices, traditions, and values we as humans connect to forests. Human-Forest Relationship can be described as an individual or community’s living relationship with the forest. Everyone’s HFR is unique and pluralistic and evolves over one’s lifetime. Forest culture consists of activities, practices, values, meanings and viewpoints related to forests that individuals share as community members in a social context. Presently, forest culture manifests itself as a HFR.

Research on the human-forest interrelatedness/relationship refers to research on forests in the field of human sciences, which encompasses, among others, research in humanities, behavioural sciences and social sciences.  In our session, we study the diversity of HFRs and their historical, cultural, and societal impacts on forests and the use of forests.
