Afternoon parallel session of the Forest Economist Club
Climate change poses numerous challenges for forests, forest owners and the entire forest sector. Forests are subject to expectations regarding their potential in climate change mitigation via forest carbon sequestration and storage, as well as via wood products substituting fossil fuels and carbon-intensive products. On the other hand, there is a significant challenge to adapt to the impacts the changing climate is predicted to cause: The changes in the growth conditions as well as the increased risks of forest damage. Aforementioned viewpoints affect the most profitable forest management, as well as the operating environment of the forest sector in general.
The forest economists will search answers to the following questions:
- How has the economic and business economic research approached the questions regarding climate change mitigation and adaptation in the context of forests and forestry?
- What kind of economic results have been obtained for forest management that take into account climate change mitigation and adaptation?
- What kind of business solutions have been developed for forestry to better consider climate issues?
- What kind of policy instruments could increase the positive climate effects of forestry, decrease the negative effects, as well as enhance climate adaptation?
