Climate change is a complex global phenomenon affecting all people and all forests. Forests and diverse ways of using and valuing forests have raised special interest regarding climate change mitigation. Accordingly, our relations to forests play a central role in climate change debates and action.

Climate change has various impacts on human-forest relationships. It changes the forests, and it also changes the ways we think about forests and the ways we use them. To a certain extent, the climate has changed as a result of previous individual and collective human-forest relationships carrying meanings, values and practices related to forests. However, human-forest relationships also extend into the future: with our actions we can change the course of development.

Accumulation and changes in scientific knowledge, paradigm shifts and new research results increase our understanding on climate change and the role of forests in it.

Presentations in the afternoon session will address e.g., the following questions:

  • What impacts can diverse human-forest relationships have on climate change?
  • What is the role of climate change in human-forest relationships?
  • How has climate change altered human-forest relationships? How can we anticipate these alterations in the future?
  • How can we study climate change debates and action, especially in the context of human-forest relationship research?
