Afternoon parallel session of the Silviculture Club
Climate change challenges today’s silvicultural methods. What tree species and their proveniences should be used in forests that are now regenerated and established. What opportunities do we have to increase species richness in different phases of forest management? Will changes in the distribution of domestic tree species (e.g., increase of maple) cause more difficulties to or provide opportunities for forestry? How about invasive species? How will silvicultural strategies change in the face of the goals of climate change and biodiversity?
What opportunities can precision forestry provide for solving these silvicultural challenges? Will we be able to control increasing risks of forest pests and diseases by dividing stands to smaller management units? How can we strengthen carbon fixation and carbon storage in forests while at the same time allow for other forest based products and services?
How can we improve adaptation of forests to climate change and its involved risks? How can we already increase resistance of today’s forests and how could we strengthen resilience of forests in the longer term?
